Sorry I'm not sure if I am posting in the right forum but I am not 100% sure what type of problem this is. My parents computer upon start up goes to the windows XP screen then immediatey to a blue screen which states,

    STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The windows Login Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000033 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

The computer is unusable at the moment.

Is this something I can be talked through to fix or should I take it to the professionals. I'm willing to give it a try.

Sorry if I haven't posted in the right forum

    Thanks
    Jennifer

    Microsoft Tech Support

A lot of the articles regarding this issue involve going into the start menu and the run program to resolve the issue. All I have to work with is a blue screen and at start up I can press F2 or F12 to get into different menues that is it. I cannot fix it the way they suggest. Microsoft sure has a great deal though! I can call them for only $59.99 for help. They are the only company I know that charges for tech support for their program.

I am not the greatest with computers if you have any better understanding on how to do this it would be greatly appreciated. I'm Lost!!!

Reboot the computer and press F8 repeatedly as soon as you hear the BIOS beep on startup. This should lead to to a white text screen on a black ground with options to start in Safe Mode, ...... and Last Known Good Configuration.
Select this if you can and post back with results.

    Still not working

I was able to get into that menu but when I pressed Last Known Good Configuration it rebooted and went right back to that blue screen with the same error message. I'm stumped as I only have limited computer skills.

Don't worry about that - this is by no means a simple problem to solve.

    Let's try another approach .....

Reboot and hit F8 to get back to that menu and this time select Safe Mode with a command prompt. If the computer boots up try a System Restore as outlined in this article ....

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP

Post back with your results. It is getting late where I am, but I will stick around for maybe another hour to see if we can resolve this.

It went back to the same blue screen with the error message. This problem is going to test us!

There are really only two options open now ....

Repair XP or make a clean install of XP. Another possibility is to make a parallel install of XP which should enable the data on the drive to be salvaged.

    The vital question is ....

Was XP loaded from a retail copy or did the computer come with XP already installed and a Recovery CD?

The third option is to wait for a response from some one else who may have other ideas.

Post back ASAP before I go to bed :)

when you turn on power can you hold F-12 - run diag. and F-12 on power enter bios setup - maintenance - enter - load defaults. if so the diag may tell you something. try defaults first i don't think that will fix it but ??? GL

    No cast iron guarantees :(

Is the CD you found the one which came with the computer? Does it have any reference to Dell on it? I believe Dell supply full install CD's but cannot be sure - never owned a Dell :)

As you appear not to have a backup of your files we need to proceed carefully. A repair of XP will not affect your files, but the use of a Recovery disk will wipe the lot out.

Let me know re. the CD and if you are running Home or Pro and I will post illustrated details as appropriate.

I'm not sure if this is my cd or his but we both have Windows XP Home Edition. It is the actual CD.

On the basis that you have a copy of the XP Home installation CD make a Repair installation as outlined and illustrated in this article ...

    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm

If the screens you see and the options offered differ from those shown let me know and quit the repair.

A repair install will not affect your files - if the repair fails there is still hope left, but saving your files becomes a little more difficult.

    Keep us posted.

    Windows recovery for dummies!

I've made it to Part 2

Now select the operating system you wish to repair, if as in most occasions there is only one, the just press "R" to continue

but after that it goes to a black screen that says

    Microsoft Windows XP(TM) Recovery Console.

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.

Type Exit to quit the recovery console and restart the computer

    1: C:\Windows

Which windows installation would you like to log onto
    (To Cancel, Press Enter)?

    What should I do?

    Sincerely
    The Dummy

    I have to ask ...

Are you sure that you did not press R on the second blue screen? This takes you to the Recovery Console.

Did you see the Windows XP Licensing Agreement and pressed F8 to continue?

    No user agreement

It takes me right from setup to press R for repair. There is no user agreement that comes up. As soon as you press r to repair it goes to that screen I sent you.

I follow everything but there is no user agreement prompt.

Did you see the 'Welcome to setup screen' as shown below and if so did you press Enter?

This problem may be deeper than at first sight :(
