    Hi,

I've read extensively about this error which seems to happen everywhere but all "causes" seem to be not applicable to my system.
When shutting down, the system restarts automatically for no reason at all, requiring a manual power-off button push.

Does anyone have a clue ? I can't remember if this started after the installation of XP SP2 or not - it's lasting for months now.

    My config :
IBM Intellistation Pro Z (dual processor)
XP2 with all security updates installed.
MSConfig parameters with "selective startup" with a strict minimum of programs starting up like antivirus & spam scanners. The machine is "clean" of every kind of spam, virus, spy, worm, etc.. so this cannot be the cause.

I'm not a BIOS expert but don't see anything abnormal there either..

    Thanks for any clue !

    How I shutdown ?

The normal Win XP interface : shutdown button, followed by a multi-choice button shutdown/restart/standby - shutdown confirmed.
    Is there another way ?

    Thx.

    Hello Eskapet,

Try the script from Kellys Korner:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 76 - Power Off or Reboot After Shutdown

Click on Power Off. Reboot is the condition you have now. Download (save option) the .vbs script and run.

    Regards - Charles

Pfff !! My W/S is too proud to poweroff !!

    Hello CharlesVar!

    Thank you but ...
Here I am again .. and to prove that I tried and tried all kinds of things, here is what I did in the correct sequence :

    1. Tried the script from Kellys Korner:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 76 - Power Off or Reboot After Shutdown

    2. Set registry key to 1 (was "0 ") under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP\poweroffActive

    3. Checked the following registry key (was set to 1 and I left it that way) : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\PowerdownAfterShutdown

    4. In Control Panel "power options" : changed turnoff hard disk set to "never" into "after 2 hours "

    5. BIOS : disabled "wake-up-on-LAN "

    6. Installed and ran this little utility :
    http://users.pandora.be/jbosman/poweroff/poweroff.htm

    Nothing helps !!
The only thing that I can see on the frontpanel of the workstation is the green light of the network which keeps flashing even when I forced the powerdown manually. Is this a clue ? (That's also why I tried disabling the wake-up on LAN in the BIOS)

Any further help / suggestions are more than welcome.

Screen saver / power / advanced settings

    Hey DyTrog,

Is this what you mean ? :

    power schemes : monitor off=20 mins / hard disks off=after 2 hrs / system standby=after 2 hrs

    advanced :
when I press the power button on my computer = set to "shut down "
    hibernate=unchecked
    UPS=service currently stopped (not configured)

    Something wrong there ?

    Thx!

One or two suggestions I will throw in. Update your chipset drivers, I will guess that it is an Intel chipset:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scr...ID=&DwnldID=12150&strOSs=OSFullName=&lang=eng
If the installation says it it is the wrong model you will need to find the archived version (last updated 2004).

Also go to the Lenovo (IBM) website and find updates for graphics, audio, etc, drivers.

A physical problem? Could the power button be jammed on? Check that the front panel of the machine is seated correctly. We had several problems like this with the IBM machines we had at work. (A test is to find where the PWR SW connector is on the motherboard, remove it and start the machine by momentarily shorting the two pins with the tip of a screwdriver).

YEP ... if only this was the cause ...
Thx anyway : I'm searching further. Someone suggested to contact IBM or check for a BIOS update - there is one, but the link fails - so I'm waiting for IBM to repair it to whom I sent an error report to, but I'm really frightened to drastically change the BIOS...

    To Mattman,

Thx Mattman but it didn't work either ... alhtough it seemed to update the drivers for all kinds of devices, it deteriorated the driver for an SMBus controller and for a DBM USB2 enhanced controller - (also, the fan kept blowing provoking a hell of a noise like in those huge old IBM mainframe computer rooms years and years ago...).
Also the "poweroff" didn't even poweroff to start up again but it rebooted without powering off first...

So : this might tell something ? I really don't know...

Rolling back the driver from these two items didn't work but thank God I had an earlier restore point which worked (which is never a certainty)

I'm back to square one and no harm done.

    Thx again for your time.

Maybe it's crashing when you shut it down. By default, XP reboots when it crashes, usually with no indication of it to the user. Have a look in your event viewer and see if there's any errors in there. Start>run>eventvwr.msc

If you haven't done so already, you should set things so you get a blue screen when it crashes rather than rebooting. To do so, right click on my computer>properties>advanced and click the settings button under startup and recovery. Uncheck the line that says automatically restart. Then reboot and see if you get a blue screen.

It's kind of a long shot but worth checking into.

I was having the exact same problem ,untill I was told that it was my new key board doing the restarts, for some reason I went from ps2 to usb key board (Technika) from Tesco ,and it was this new key board that was causing the problems.
I have now gone back to my old key board (ps2) and everythink is aok now .

    Hello Eskapet,

Looking back over this thread, I think pestguard is on the right track.

Have you tried shutting down any peripheral equipment prior to shutdown? Printers, USB devices, modems, etc.

Are there any CD's/DVD's in the Rom drives?

    Regards - Charles

    Just A Note ScanDisk,CheckDisk,..

I downloaded Microsofts Tweak UI.And used a command such as 'disabling,or "ScanDisk on Shutdown ". Disabling a routine for/from the disk scanner pertaining to the shutdown. This did the trick for me.

Although,I dont know the reason the machine might see an 'error, during the shutdown routine. As noted above.

It may be 'Disable Scandisk on Error ",something to this effect. The setting is done within Tweak UI.

By using the Tweakui settings you are using a "workaround" (it seems to be either enabling or disabling chkdsk). Not my "kettle of fish ", I would rather get my system working the way it should. Since you are using dual processors (I take it that means two separate processors), it might not be so straight forward.

I was meaning to reply the other day, but lost track of the thread. Bangs, pops? Degraded drivers? Intellestation I expect that means a business work station (there are hundreds of different models listed at Lenovo/IBM). I suggest looking up your model's specifications and information at Lenovo (see "how do I identify my model "). For my last IBM I found it very hard to find out what (Intel) chipset the motherboard had and how to upgrade the drivers. If your model is several years old, it may not have an update for SP2, but I am only guessing. The driver upgrades for workstations are not kept current after a while.

Have you made any hardware modifications?

If your system seems to work fine with the "tweak ", just use it if you like. Me, I would be trying to find out how and why it was necessary.

This is a long shot, but as you seem to have tried everything else, maybe, just maybe ....
You hadn't had someone play with the inside of your PC just before your problem started? Someone who disconnected the little power leads on your motherboard and re-connected them badly. That sort of thing has been known to happen.
What happens when you press the power button at the front of your PC? In your power options, advanced tab, you say you set it to shutdown. If it doesn't shutdown but resets itself then it is quite possible that the Reset and the Power Switch leads are reversed (both are 2-pin). If you have a Reset button, what happens when you push that one?
    My 2 grains.
    Roncy
