    hei,

i found all my bookmarks (ff 2.0.0.3) gone this morning. after doing some googling, reading old posts etc. i found the automatically created backup files on my computer. however, when i copy the last one into my profile folder and start ff, it still doesn't display my bookmarks.

after quitting ff the size of the bookmark.html decreases from 235 kb to 1. the bookmark.bak also has a size of only 1 now, making it useless.

how can i get ff to read my 235 kb bookmark file from yesterday?

    thanks a lot

Firefox has many safeguards. Beside the .bak file, it has backups of the past five days, in the bookmarksbackup folder. If you just rename the .bak file to bookmarks.html you should be prompted to replaced the bad file. If you use one of the daily backups, you will have to copy it to the body of the profile, and, then rename it to bookmarks.html.It does not seem to ne that you renamed the file.

    hei westside,

thanks for your answer. i did actually rename it to bookmarks. not explicitly to bookmarks.html, doesn't windows recognize that by itself? the icon looks like the bookmarks one created by ff when shut down.

i usually use macs, so i don't really know how windows deals with the file extensions.

however, neither a bookmarks, nor a bookmarks.html can be read by ff when restarted. the bookmarks folder remains empty and after closing the ff session the empty content is copied into the bookmarks file in the profile.

there are some important things i bookmarked, but as i still have the backups i'm quite sure that i can get them back with your help. thanks for that in advance

    Ernesto,
I had a long reply, explaining everything, and got a fatal error when I tried to post. Will try again, but, griefly
You must rename to bookmarks.html, and have the new file replace the existing one. Windows can tell that the files are different. It does not add extention, automatically.

    hei igjen,

i still did not manage to get my bookmarks back. state of the art is now that i found the bookmarkbackups, the html i want to use is 235kb.

after naming it bookmarks.html (i found out how to make windows display the file extensions) and restarting ff (or the whole computer), the 235kb file is still in the profile folder, but when i start ff the bookmarks folder is still empty.

i tried to import these html into the bookmarks (in the manage bookmarks interface), but this didn't work neither.

after closing ff the 235kb file becomes a 1 kb file. does anyone have some suggestions what the problem might be?

    Ernesto,
did you do the renaming with Firefox closed, from Windows Explorer. If Firefox was still open, there would be no change.
