My friend has a Hewlett-Packard system that came with a "back up" partition. Maybe you are used to something similar. I keep telling them that if the HDD breaks down that they will lose all their data, but I think they expect
"Oh, Matt will fix it ". Not a broken HDD I won't :D

Backing up to the same HDD is not secure.

You will need to repartition or use a disk partitioning utility. I put my data for backing up on a separate partition, it is then easy to back that up to another HDD, across a network, or burn onto optical disks.

Which backing up program was used? Acronis makes a separate partition I think.

    Hi Dytrog,

Because an XP install doesn't do that and never did.

What you're asking about is, if done, done by the OEM as a way to recover.

Also its a backup partition, not a disk, two different things.

i didn't say what i meant well. i just meant i usually see A C D & E with D being the back-up. D & E on the comp. is a cd rom. with no back-up. on this HP comp. i am now using D is my back-up. the one w/o a back-up is a gateway. this isn't OEM I installed it. so you ansswered my Q. I need to either not worry about it or try to make one. As i have most of my comp. on cd I guess it would be a waste of space ?

    Hi dytrog,

    Well, up to you :)

If you have the space, it's more convenient and faster than a CD and then you have an additional backup source on other media.

But to fully take advantage of HD backups, why not get a medium size HD; get a HD enclosure and connect it to the system via USB. If you want to look at what HD enclosures look like and the costs involved, go to Newegg and search for HD enclosures. The costs run anywhere from about 20.00 USD to 60.00. A (P)ATA drive nowadays costs less then a dollar a GB. Or you can go elaborate and go for a ready made backup drive with backup software bundled with it. That however can be expensive.

    Regards - Charles
