Hello bigelbear and welcome to the Board,

    First, try a basic remedy.

Go into Device Manager and uninstall both - reboot. On bootup, XP will detect the devices and reload the generic drivers.

Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.

While you're in there, are there any yellow caution signs next to the devices?

    Are these USB connected devices?

Are there any special drivers you had to load when you installed them?

    Regards - Charles

    not usb

The mouse and keyboard won't work long enough for me to do any of this. I can unplug it and sometimes the mouse will move for a second but the keyboard will not even light te num lock or cap lock lights. I tried rebooting with the keyboard unplugged and the mouse curser moved for a second and stopped. The devices are plugged in thru the mouse and keyboard ps2 ports.

    mouse and keyboard inop

When I unplug the power cord and wait a short time the mouse will move the curser for a second and then stop so it will not let me attempt any remedy. Also the num lock and cap lock will not light on the keyboard.

Please note that you should never plug/unplug PS/2 mice/keyboard while you're PC is powered up...regardless of the fact that it doesn't "seem" to cause any problems. These ports can be fried by doing so.

It would seem at this point, you may be stuck having to use USB input devices. It would be at least interesting to see how a USB mouse and keyboard would act in your system.

I'm assuming you're not using the problem system to post.

Can you switch mice with the working system?

That'll tell us a number things - whether its hardware or something else.

And yes, please turn both systems off when unpluging and pluging in.

    Regards - Charles

    mouse and keyboard

I am posting from my laptop and turning off power before connections. I currently have my mouse temporarily working with keyboard unplugged but still runs accross the screen and stops. Am going to try system restore.
