So in my quest to get a Core Duo, I find that there seems to be a difference between a Core Duo and a Core 2 Duo. What is this now?

And what's the deal with 64-bit vs. 32-bit? Where or where would I see the difference in a 64-bit machine? Do I need special applications written for 64-bit? Sorry if this is a slightly moronic inquiry.

Thanks to all of you wizards. :)

Core 2 Duo is the latest greatest....

No need or benefit for using a 64bit cpu....

From what I've heard about Core Duo vs. Core 2 Duo, the latter is the way to go. I also saw a gaming performance comparison between Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Duo Extreme and the latter cpu didn't warrant the extra cost.

If you're referring to running a 64-bit OS, keep in mind it's somewhat dangerous territory meant for brave souls.

Thanks for the link, Arie. Very good read and I guess decision made. It doesn't matter. Their benchmark tests even show what seems to be only measurable differences, which are likely not noticeable. One more thing about the Core Duo's. The lower-end ones come with only 2MB L2 cache. How big a deal is it to get one with 4MB L2 cache? How would I notice that? Thanks! :)

To Chiles4: Thanks. Yet another decision made. No 64-bit for Crunch. Some genius told me that the Core Duo's were somehow related to 32-bit and 64-bit. Obviously not true. Thanks for your insight...;)
