I have started using windows recently and a flood of problems has arisen. Most I have conquered but this one I just can't figure out.

When I open a window, then maximize it, then close it, and then reopen it, the maximize position is incorrect. The window does not go all the way to the top, and is not "tacked" to the edges of my screen, as maximized windows should be.

    EXAMPLE:

    Normal maximized window (Manually maximized)

After closing the window, I reopen it. The saved maximized position is off, it's too small.

The supposedly maximized window can even be moved around!

I have googled and search and I have not found an answer.
    Hopefully someone here knows!

    Thanks you

    -Kyle

After you have dragged it to the size you want hold down the Ctrl key then click the X to close the window. It should now open to the correct size.

Hello KClaisse and welcome to the Board :)

In the maximised position - double click on the Window's bar at the top. You should notice a "movement" of the window. See if that "unsticks" the window.

    Hi Kyle,

This issue can have several causes, but 1st line of "attack" is this:

1.Open the window. If not correct >Look at window state.
If "normal" (restored state),position and drag corner to fill the screen.
Hold down Shift or Ctrl and close the window.
(I know Ctrl was already suggested, but I have more success with Shift)
You may have to do this twice.(Open the window again and close, holding Shift)

2.If the window opens maximized but too small, click the restore button, which
brings it to the "Normal" state, then use the procedure above.
(Double clicking the Titlebar does the same as the Restore button.)
    BTW,you can't move a maximized window.

There are a couple of small apps that can help also.

    WManager (WindowsManager) from http://fcmsoft.narod.ru/index.htm
    and also
    WinExplorer from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/winexp.html

Both let you set the window position.

However if you have a lot of files, your Windows position memory may not be able to handle all of them.
The reason is, that the number of folders whose position is remembered, is restricted by a setting in the Registry.(I think it is 2000)
Anyway,if that's the case, you can increase that through a change in the settings.
You can do this manually or with a .reg file.
    KellysKorner has it: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks2.htm
    Fixes for Windows XP
Look for :Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000
Download and save the bags8000.reg file.
reg file > double click and merge or r-click > select Merge.

Hope this helps a little :)

    Pete.

Thanks for all the information, unfortunately none of them has solved my problem. :(

But as you can see in
    http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/9541/max3vf7.png
The saved position for a maximized window can be moved about, which is why I am starting to think this problem is a little more than a minor issue. I am going to uninstall all of my graphical drivers and see if that helps, this nView stuff is really weird.

    Hi,

Ha,the "cat is out of the bag ":)
I don't have nView, but I have HydraVision which comes with ATI graphics cards.
Anyways, both use window position memory as well.(Meaning,in addition to
    Windows native handling of this)
You may be right about the graphics drivers. Also check the settings in the nView control panel.
See if nVidia makes a mention of this.

Maybe somebody on this or other forums have similar issues with this.
Plug in your video card number and do a search ,nVidia,Google etc

    Hello KClaisse,

If this turns out not to be a driver/graphics issue, I have another suggestion.

I recommended a fix from Kellys Korner on solving a QL toolbar problem:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

I downloaded and ran to see what it did. Much to my delight, it solved a minor annoyance that I had with the oldest XP installation I'm running (continuously for 5 years).

The problem was that in openning a window, XP didn't remember the size of the window that I set from prior sessions - when I open drives for instance, I want the window to open as narrow rectangles so I can look at two drive windows side be side. What I had to do was drag the windows into the shapes I wanted every time.

What Kellys tool did was reset the Windows Shell counters, and there is a particular counter for windows sizes which I probably hit the limit with or got corrupted, the name of which escapes me at the moment. It may be that this counter is corrupted in your installation.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

    Thanks for this tip.
I wouldn't have thought that this might be related,
but your experience sheds another light on it.
Another tool for my "Toolbox" :)

An interesting one for people who have a lot of drives :)
    MTExplorer- opens 6 panes. http://www.mtexplorer.com/

I'm sorry this was a bit off topic, but thought I should mention it.

Here's a pinch of good news!

    I deleted everything in HKLM::Software::Microsoft::Windows::Current Version::Run

    And now everything is fine.
I did make a backup so I will enable everything 1 at a time to see what the culprit was.

    Hi Kyle,

Great, keep us posted as to what was under Run that
    was interfering with window placement.
I for one would be very interested of anything that screws things up :)

You should restore the registry key and then use msconfig to run it down. Click start>run and type msconfig. Then click on the startup tab. The programs you see in the run key will all be listed there (along with some others, most likely). You can uncheck the box next to each one to disable them one or a few at a time until you figure out which one is doing it.

Whoa, I don't know what happened, but I posted this about an hour ago.

Well I enabled the startup items one by one and the one that was causing all of my problems was nwiz. It's nVidia's nView software that allows you to do all sorts of things to your windows and displays. I don't need it, so it's gone.

    It was in HKLM::Software::Microsoft:Windows:Current Version::Run

    it's entry was
    "nwiz "= "nwiz.exe /install "

    Removed that, all's well.

    Hi Kyle,

Well it's great that you found it.
I guess you don't use 2 monitors ,because nView is required to manage the dual setup.
It's just a guess, but remember I mentioned to check the settings in the control panel, well, you may have been able to effect the window placement there as well.
    Anyway,if you're happy without it,fine with me :)

    Pete.

Corrected link for AB Commander Lite

Attempting to properly maximize Firefox and Thunderbird windows is something that has annoyed me for a long time. Mine have always opened slightly less than maximized, as in Kyle's image #2. Resizing and closing them while holding the Ctrl key has never "fixed" the problem, but double-clicking the titlebar did ... thanks, Charles, I'd never heard of that one.

There's another window-handling program that hasn't been mentioned ... AutoSizer not only maximizes windows, but it will also center them or open them in a specified location or size. The authors are somewhat lackadaisical about implementing upgrades, as it's a free utility, but they have been receptive to suggestions for improvements.

Two more dual-pane replacements for Windows Explorer are FmEdit 2001 (shareware) and AB Commander Lite (the freeware version is no longer available from the authors, but can be downloaded from the linked site). I particularly like AB Commander Lite for comparing the contents of folders, as it can use a grid display.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the links, but the link for AB Commander Lite is eventually redirected to the main site
and is a download for v6.93 (shareware)

I ran into the same thing looking for Abee CHM Maker free.
At first it looks like you're getting the free version, but after going through the motions,
each one eventually ends up at the shareware version.
I must have tried at least 15 sites, all with the same outcome.

    Pete.

    Corrected link in previous post

    Hi Pete,

Good catch! Normally, I check a site to make sure the proper file actually is downloadable, but I was in a hurry, and neglected to do so. I've edited my post to provide a link to a site from which AB Commander Lite can be downloaded.

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks,great job!
You're right,it does make a good dual pane explorer.
I just tried it and it works fine.
PC Advisor must be one of the few sites that cache the files.
Some others that do, are OldApps http://www.oldapps.com/
    and OldVersion http://www.oldversion.com/
There are a few more, but I forget at this moment.

Back to my search for Abee CHM Maker free:)
