Each evening when I switch off my PC I am given the option of shutting down and installing updates or shutting down and ignoring the updates.

Why should Windows need to install updates every single day? How can I find out what they are, and how to get them installed once and for all so that I can switch off instantly?

    Thanks in advance for advice,
    B

This is a known problem, and I have fixed it recently but can't recall the exact fix. Here's what I think that I used: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

I suggest you set Automatic Updates to 'Notify me but don't automatically download and install them'

You will see the yellow shield in the Notification Area when updates are available - clicking on the shield will bring up a window listing the updates which you can assess and download some or all of them according to your needs and have specific updates ignored if you so wish.

    Thanks guys.

Pete, I have set updates to be manual, but I continually get the yellow shield wanting me to install the MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security UPdate (KP927978). No matter how many times I have let it install, it wants to keep installing.

USASMA, thanks for suggesting Bill Castner's tip. I have searched for the error code it suggests but as I don't have it in my system, according to Google Deskto Search, I guess that isn't the issue.

Is there anything else that might get rid of this annoyance for me?

    Thanks in advance,
    B
