Vanishing Word buttons

I have lost the Bold, Italic, and Underline buttons from my Word toolbar. The alignment buttons are missing, too, now that I look for them, so I assume others less used have gone as well.

How can I get them back?

 

Word will display the most recently used buttons on the toolbar. When it runs out of space, the rest are in a drop-down list you open by clicking on the tiny arrows to the right of the area where those buttons are usually located.

Are those tiny arrows not there?

 

Yes the little arrows are there, but none of the missing items appear in the lists that appear. Also, the missing buttons are exactly the most used ones, especially Underline.

 

You can add the buttons back by right click on the toolbar, left clicking Customize.

When you find a button you want, use the left mouse button to drag it to the toolbar and drop it on.
