    Hello everyone this is my first post although I've been a member for a few months. I usually find what I need in other posts, this time I haven't been as lucky. Hopefully someone can help. O.k here is the problem;
My mate has had a Dell dimension 3000 series for just over year, was running it with xp service pack 2, decided to give vista a go installed a trial version, which worked fine as far aa I know. However his trial period has ran out and he decided to go back to xp, so he uninstalled (or tried to) vista. Since he done this he has has major problems getting his pc to do anything other than this. After the Dell start up logo where F2 and F12 are options in the top right.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Windows Boot Manager
    Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem;
    1) Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2) Choose your language settings, and click "next ".
    3) Click repair your computer.

If you don't have this disc, contact your system admin or computer manufacturer for assistance.

    File:\windows\system32\drivers\intelide.sys

    status: 0xc000000f

Info:Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt.

    ENTER=CONTINUE ESC=EXIT
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today I went to his and collected his pc set up. To see what if anything I could do before turning to bbs for help.

I have tried the ENTER=CONTINUE this brings me to this screen
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER
Choose an operating system to start, or press TAB to select a tool
    microsoft windows vista[debugger enabled]
To specify an advance option for this choice; press F8.

    Tools:
    Windows Memory Diagnostic.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I have been through the tool option of memory diagnostic it does 2 out of 2 passes with no problems found. It does however say that a full report will be given on next log in. But I can't get as far as user log in because it just goes back to the first Windows Boot Manager screen. (standard test setting)

The only disc he gave me with it was his Dell resourceCD, I have tried placing this into the CDdrive to see if a repair etc will start up, but it does nothing, apart from go to the first WBM screen mention above.

I'd also like to point out that the Boot Manager only offers the vista operating system. None of the F8 advanced options for this choice work either, ie; last known good configuration, safe mode etc. Did not try all options like kernel debugger because for one not sure if thats gonna help or what it will do.
Have also tried making the cd drive the only start up and putting in my "Your system and drivers" disc (I have a Tiny built PC) to see if that would do anything after not having anyluck with his Dell resource disc. You guessed it nothing happened.
    Yours:confused:

Which means that you'll format the hard drive & then reinstall XP.

Thanks for the fixes and quick replies, I can't get a command prompt to Fdisk and the resource disc doesn't do anthing when I restart the pc.
When I try to go through the F8 advanced options at the choose operating system screen
None of the safe modes seem to work, they all just go back to the windows boot manager screen.

eg: Safe mode with command prompt (ENTER)
    goes to this screen:
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Loading Windows Files

Loaded...... (The files load quick so can't catch their names)
    Loaded......
    Loaded......
    Loaded......
    Loaded......
    Loaded......

--------------------------------------------------------------------------It loads various files and gets about 3/4 of the way down screen then goes black, then takes me back to Windows Boot Manager Screen.
My mate has only ever had XP on his pc before trying the Vista OS,
His pc was set to NTFS, would this cause any problem?
Have tried google 0xc000000f before posting here, the file missing is different than the one my mate has missing: File:\windows\system32\drivers\intelide.sys Going to try google groups just now.
How can I get a command prompt to format the drive? this may help.

...which means there is NO operating system installed on the hard drive. He needs to put in the XP installation cdrom, reboot the computer and boot from the XP cd. Then, after the setup has loaded do:
    1. delete all partitions
    2. create a new partition(s)
    3. select to install XP on the C partition
    4. format the partition as NTFS (full format, not quick format)
    5. continue installation

Cheers TonyT will try that, He's bringing another disc over tonight.
One thing I know you said he has no OS because he had XP then installed vista then uninstalled vista. I Follow that but on the WBM screen where it says choose OS it lists
    Microsoft Windows Vista [debugger enabled]

    Why so?

If I go into bios and make the cd drive the only bootable drive then put in the resource disc after a minute or so of disc activity, I get this message after a beep beep sound.
Strike F1 to retry boot or F2 to setup utility, retry comes back to the same message, and F2 takes me to bios.

He has no operating system but still has a bootloader installed. (in the Master Boot Record of the hard disk). That boot menu is there but it cannot link to any operating system. best to wipe the disk completely as described above and do a fresh clean XP install which will create a new MBR.

Thanks for all your help everybody, my mate came down with his other disc and it's surface was just as bad. Scratches and what not:rolleyes: . So I did a clean Vista install. Now his pc is running again, even if it's on Vista OS. Now I can go about, going back to XP when his new disc arrives.
    Much appreciation:D
