I have several JPG files named "IMG_#" where "#" is a sequential number provided by my digital camera. I just returned from a long vacation and, after offloading the pictures from camera to desktop, I'd like to rename the files to include the name of the different places we visited.
Is there a way to rename several files at once and only change part of the filename while leaving the remainder as is? For example, if I have two files names "IMG_123" and "IMG_124 ", can I rename them with one command to be "Place_123" and "Place_124" where I only changed the "IMG" part of the filename but left the "_#" part unchanged?

There are many free renaming utilities for just this situation. Might look on www.snapfiles.com
