Google splash page rearranged itself

Yesterday my Google splash page rearranged itself. I use it as my default browser opening page. It's the standard Google splash page, not customized in any way, and ordinarily the Web, Images, Video, News, etc. links (tabs?) are below the word "Google" and above the search window. Now they're at the very top of the page with a pale blue horizontal line below them. Everything works OK, but I'd like to get it all back the way it was. So far I haven't found any way to do that. Any ideas?

The specs for my system are in my signature, below.

Later: A reboot didn't work, and I just did a System Restore back to Wednesday, but it didn't work, either. What's strange is that the problem exists with my NS 7.1 browser but not with IE 6.0 when I start it up (IE 7 isn't happy on this system, conflicting with something (ZoneAlarm?).)

That sounds to me like an add-on that I had with Firefox once - but it was a while back and I don't know anything about Netscape. I'd suggest checking the add-ons and toolbars in your Netscape browser.

Also, a HiJackThis log may help to point to the culprit - but I know even less about that than I do about Netscape! :(

usasma: Thanks for replying. I checked to see if there were any strange toolbars in action, but the problem is in the Google panel in the window, not in the Netscape window where all the usual toolbars, menus and other contols are. That blue line doesn't want to react in any way when I put the mouse cursor near it. And there aren't any tabs or handles or anything for me to use to change anything in the Google area of the display. The Google splash page has simply rearranged the location of that one line of links/tabs within itself.

I wondered if I changed my default homepage to something else, would it appear correctly? It did. What if I returned it back to google.com, would it be OK now? It wasn't. So maybe the bad google.com homepage was in the cache. If I rebooted while using a different homepage, then entered google.com as a new homepage, would it appear the way it should? Nope, still the bad old way. Disgusting.

I'm not positive, but I doubt a HJT scan would lead to a fix. My reasoning is that the google.com splash page shows up the way it should when I open IE 6. So the problem doesn't seem to be a system problem that HJT would recognize. Maybe I'm wrong.

Ramona: No, I use just plain old google.com. Your version is what I discovered when I explored Google's personalized home page. I thought maybe I could delete that extraneous line at the top and somehow get back to the classic view. It moved that line down where it belonged, but it also moved "Google" and added all that Home tab stuff at the bottom. Didn't want that.

    Greetings,

Just a guess, but in the upper right corner of the "goofy" Google page, next to the "sign in" is there an entry "Classic home" ?
If there is, left mouse click on that entry and it shud change the display to the regular "Classic Home" page.and your startup page shud be what you want. If that doesn't work, sorry - it was just a guess...

captjlddavis: When I'm looking at the "goofy" version, what's there is "Personalized Home." If I click on that, I get the version that Ramona inquired about, which does have "Classic Home" there. Clicking on that, changes the view back to the goofy view I'm trying to figure out how to fix.

The Classic Home view is what I want to use. I'd just like it back the way it was and it's supposed to be.

Sorry, but I can not replicate your problem. ( I don't have NS 7.1)

alternating the "Classic" and "Personalized" entries toggle display as indicated in 7.2 and Seamonkey....

Please post the Location Bar entry that is present when you get the page you DO NOT want. (or a screenshot if possible)

    thanks

    Thanks,

Like I said - I don't have NS 7.1 so I can't check for sure. Things work pretty much the way I said when I toggle the "Classic" and "Personalized ".

When you were dinkin' around, did you maybe change the "theme "in Google.
You may have to sign in again to change it back to "classic "

Otherwise the only thing I can think of is a stored cookie from google.

With NS closed, rename "cookies.txt" to "cookies1.txt and open NS. if the problem is still there, close and rename "cookies1.txt" to "cookies.txt" and you are back to where you started.

sorry I can't be more help.

    regards:captjlddavis

    Well, that was interesting.

I've never registered with Google, so I don't have any theme or personalized version, just the standard Google splash page. I tried the change to cookies.txt and it worked! Very clever idea. I had tried earlier using a workaround with the cache, but as I said before, it didn't work.

With the old cookies file renamed, I had to re-register (log in) here to get back in, and also at a couple other sites I frequent. Will I have to go through that everywhere I had cookies for, or now that this new cookie seems to work can I rename that file back to plain cookies.txt and use it as before? And if I do that, will this fix stay in place? I could find out by trying it myself, but maybe posting the question will have educational value for other members. Besides, it's easier.

I don't think renameing the old on back will do it for you...

    Try the following:

    1. Rename the old cookie file back so you have the problem again.

    2. Go into cookie manager.

    3. Find a a cookie named:
    site=google.com
    cookie name = PREF
    4. delete it.

    close and reopen NS

    see what happens.

if it don't work, delete all cookies and start over is all I can suggest.
