I just bought a new computer with XP. I am having trouble getting the DVD to play movies. It tells me to adjust the resolution or the color depth. The resolution is at the 800x600 and wont go any lower. The color depth is set at 32bit. Can you tell me if I should go into advanced settings and do something there? Any help is appreciated.

800 x 600 is pretty low resolution these days. It may require higher.

Could you post the brand of DVD player you have and the exact, entire error message you are getting?

I dont know exactly what brand of CD it is. It came with my Compaq Presario 6000 Series. As far as the message I get this is it exactly.... "Playback failed due to a problem with the video subsystem. Lowering your screen resolution or color depth may fix the problem. "

I tried fooling around with both the color and the resolution but..nada

Open the Device Manager by right-clicking on My Computer (either on the Desktop or in Windows Explorer), clicking on the Hardware tab, then on the Device Manager button.

Clicking on the plus sign beside Display Adapters and DVD/CD-ROM drives will display the exact model of your graphics card and your DVD drive.

You probably have a 17" monitor, so try setting your screen resolution to at least 1024x768. You may need to update the video drivers from the HP/Compaq website (http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_list.asp), or speak to a tech rep.

As a last resort, return the computer to wherever you bought it and have them correct the problem.

I have an extended warranty in-house repair service and have decided to let them come in and fix it. I paid a lot of moola for this computer and its only 2 weeks old. I might as well take advantgage of the warranty. I thank you all very much for your quick response to my problem.
