Working on a HP Pavillion DV8000 laptop, Windows Media Center 2005 OS, installed a Dell Synaptics Touchpad driver to be able to disable touchpad automatically (not an option with HP drivers), HP says to do it manually with a button along the top of the keyboard, but it doesn't have one on this machine. Figured I'd try it, if it didn't work, I'd just restore it to a point before I installed it. Worked like a champ. BUT, unknown to me, the person who owns it (friend who lives in Florida, I'm in Texas, so trying to walk her through this) had installed a trial version of PC Pitstop, which creates it's own restore points, used it a couple of times then got afraid to use it again and uninstalled it, so system restore cannot restore to an earlier point now. She was also having a problem with her screensaver and a couple of other items not working with a Microsoft USB Wireless Mouse, and Windous Update installed their fix for this (KB913405) Microsoft HID-Non User Input Data Filter BEFORE I had her install the Dell Drivers . End result was System Restore doesn't work, back to same problem with Screensaver and other stuff not working. I had her try to run Windows Update to reinstall the above mentioned fix for the wireless mouse, but it won't show up anymore, since it had already been installed. Searched Windows Catalog to try to download it and send it to her so she could install it manually, but it's not listed there. Anyone have any other suggestions? 'Bout to pull out what remains of my poor old gray hairs. One other important piece of info I forgot to mention, I found the file names I needed, had her do an advanced search (hidden protected system files), and they're not on the computer, so reregistering them is not an option. HELLLLLLLLLLLLP !

Sorry 'bout that, wrong KB number

My bad, hit the 9 instead of 0, it's KB913405, maybe that'll clear up the muddied waters, read the post again using that number and it'll give you exactly what I'm after, I'll try going back to the original message and edit it using the right number, might help someone else down the line. Appreciate the quick response, hope you're having a good day, dealing with idiots like me.

    Appreciate it, but

You read the post before I realized I had left out the most important part, that the files were not on the computer, therefore WindowsUpdate thinks it's already installed the patch (which it did BEFORE the touchpad drivers were installed), what I need to do now is figure out some way to either trick Windows Update into installing the patch (preferable to me, but she isn't too computer savvy, and hate to take the chance on her being able to follow my instructions over the phone), or figure out how to get a standalone copy of the file, so I can email it to her and let her install it. She can do that alright, just double click on it and watch it install. Sorry for my omission on the first post which led to your link to the KB, but now I really am unable to use Windows Update, and need some help on how to get the file installed without Windows Update. Any ideas? Also, if you have any suggestions on how to get System Restore working again it would be really appreciated

 If the files are not on the computer how can Update detect them?

To go over old ground again the update to which you refer is not automatically offered by Microsoft Update - you must manually select it from Hardware, Optional. Have you tried this?

Scouring MS and the Internet it would seem that this update is not available for download other than via Microsoft Update.

The only other suggestion I can make is to rename .....

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2

    to

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2old ......

The catroot folder will be recreated - I would reboot.
