    Hi all

I foolishly downloaded Tuneup Utilities 2007 from an unauthorised site and have had the following problems since.

When I re-boot, I get a comment box stating 'setting up personel settings for scvhost'.

Outwardly no real signs of a problem, but my PC is sluggish and a little unresponsive. However, Adwatch is continually logging registry modifications and when I looked at the event log it had recorded some 28,000 registry event blocks - and counting! A typical event log reads:-

    Root: HKEY _LOCAL_MACHINE
    Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version Run
    Data:
    New Data: \Windows\scvhost.exe

These just keep repeating endlessly in a series of 3 to 4 events with Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version Run or Run Once or Run Services.

When I first got the problem the PC was just about on it's knees so I have run the following:

    1) Norton Symantec Security Suite 2007. This detected a Trojan, didn't name it and could only partially remove it.

2)Ad-Aware SE V1.06r1. No problems found

3)XSoft Spy V4.22. No problems found

    4)AVG Anti-Spyware V7.5.0.50 Trial. Foung a Trojan, didn't name it and couldn't remove it.

    5) Ran bitdefender on-line scan. Tooh hours, found some problems but didn't provide much detail and said my PC was still infected.

All definitions fully up to date.

After all of this, my PC is running better but not great and Ad-Aware is not reporting on registry changes. However, the moment I re-boot the cycle starts over again.

Please help. I clearly have some problem but can't trace it or remove it. I have run Hijack This a copied the report.

    Hi Paul & welcome :)

Looks like Norton may have removed the file itself. I don't see the nastie running.
Norton is not all that great removing registry references.

Please disable Ad-Watch so it does not interfere with the fix:

    To disable AdWatch:

    1.) Open AdAware SE.
2.) Go to AdWatch User Interface.
3.) Go to Tools and Preferences.
4.) At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.

Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.

5.) Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.

    Next:

Start Hijackthis, run system scan only and check:

    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
<-- if you set this policy yourself then please ignore this line.

Close all open windows and click "fix checked ".

    Reboot

Locate C:\windows\scvhost.exe and upload it here if found.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=20

I'd like to know what we are dealing with. Many trojans use scvhost as file name and Norton names are too generic.

In the upload page please include link from here so I know where that file came from.

Once uploaded....delete it if present. Note the spelling and location!!

Please post a fresh hijackthis log & let me know if scvhost.exe was found and if you had trouble to upload/delete it.

In addition to new HJT log.....
I wanna see where else that scvhost is loading from.

    Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~fstaal01/downloads/regsearch.zip

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box (note the spelling):

    scvhost.exe

    then hit Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.

    Post results.

Close notepad before closing regsearch or it may hang.

    Next:

    Download WinPFind3U.exe from here:

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/winpfind3u.exe

to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files.
It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.

Under Driver Services check "Non Microsoft "

Leave other settings at left as they are.

At right under "additional scans" checkmark the following:

    BotCheck
    ColumnHandlers
    ContextmenuHandlers
    Disabled MSConfig items
    Policy settings
    Security Settings
    Shell Spawning

    Hit "run scan "

Wait till scan is done. this will take a while so please be patient

Once finished a log is produced.
    Please post the resulting log.

This log can be quite log so please check the entire thing got posted.
it needs to have <end of report> at the bottom.
It may be necessary to span log across a few replies.

Let me know how computer is running.

    Thanks :)

Many thanks for your response and advice Blender. I think I may have removed, or at least partially removed the threat with a combination of AV and Spyware programs but intend to try your suggestions to ensure I'm absolutely clean. Certainly my PC seems to be running ok just now.

Will post back progress and logs.

    Hi Blender

    I ran HJT again

    This time F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe did not appear. I checked and fixed O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present as instructed.

Should I continue on as recommended or does it look like the problem has been resolved?

The only thing I had when I rebooted was a message Cannot find 'C:\PROGRA~1\INSTAL~1\{85D3C~1\setup.exe'. I presume this is just pointing to an invalid registry and can be deleted?

    Many thanks

    Paul

    Hi,

Yes please do as instructed. There are several entries in registry I'm looking for that is commonly modified by these malwares to reduce your security and also to give it more load points. (makes removal more difficult)

The info I asked above *should show me where 'C:\PROGRA~1\INSTAL~1\{85D3C~1\setup.exe' is trying to load from.

    Thanks :)

    Tammy
