How to shutdown without using mouse or power button

Win XP Pro SP2 I.E. 6.

Using GE Optical Mouse hardwired to PC. On occasion the mouse ceases to be recognized by my PC - the arrow changes to hand then dissapears. I have to reboot to get mouse back.

I seem to recall that there is a way to shut down without using power button in this situation but I cannot recall what it is. Am I thinking of something else or what.

Please tell me if there is a way of shutting down with just the keyboard and how to do it.

i use flag, then ^ v > < arrows to navigate to turn off restart etc.

Shut down that computer

Hold down the Control key ( Ctrl) bottom left of keyboard
And the Escape key (ESC) top right at the same time
The Start Menu will come up
On that menu on the bottom right in red you will see shut down computer underlined the letter U in the phrase "Turn Off Computer "
tap the letter u and that is all.
The shortcuts were retained for tech type people who often infuenced and set trends
Interestingly this keyboard shortcut seems not to work in Vista
Yet another reason not to upgrade

 

Very elegant! I like it. However, all my keyboards have the Escape key in the top left.

 

Hold Down ALT key and press F4 key also closes programs and once all programs are closed ALT + F4 will bring up the shut down screen.
