    Hi,
When trying to boot my Dell with XP Home I get the following message:

    lsass.exe System Error
An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function.

No matter how many times I try it will not boot. Is ther a way to replace this file without reinstalling the entire operating system and loosing everytrhing?

Hope someone can help. I checked the other postings on lsass.exe but couldn't find one with this particular error message.

    Thanks
    Joe

When booting the computer hit F8 repeatedly to get a white text screen on a black ground and select Last Known Good ....

Let us know if this works.

    re lsass error

    Thanks Pete C

I hit the F8 during boot up and I got the black screen with the white lettering. It showed the bios version, Dell dimension 8250 series and then it said:
Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
Primary hard disk drive 1 not found
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 key to run set up utility

When I hit the F1 ket it does nothing but say the same thing. When I hit the F2 key I get the set up menu.

    Thanks
    Joe

Most of the references I can find on this point to a reinstall, but there are a few things that can be tried depending on what sort of XP CD you have.

Please post if it is a Recovery CD or a full install CD - it is the latter I am looking for :)

    re lsass error

    Hi Pete,
The CD that I have came with the computer when I got it from Dell. It says:
    Operating System
    Reinstallation CD
    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    Including Service Pack 1
Only use this CD to reinstall
the operating system on a Dell computer.
This CD is not for reinstallation of
    programs or drivers.

Then I have another CD that is a Dell resource CD
which has drivers and utilities on it.

    Thanks
    Joe

As you can see I am treading very carefully here as most OEM computers come with a Recovery disk or partition which wipes out everything on the computer and reinstalls a mirror image of what was on the drive when the computer was delivered. Dell, I believe, supply an OEM copy of XP which is essentially a full copy of XP tailored to the Dell computer.

Reinstallation CD implies a full copy, but I cannot be sure (I build my own computers so have no experience of Dells).

Please read through this article and have it live on the computer you are using to post on the Board .....

    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm

Boot the Dell from the Reinstallation CD and if you see the screens shown in Part 1 proceed. The key screen is the first one shown in Part 2. If the Windows installation on the Dell is recognised hit the R button to repair it and follow the screen prompts.

If the existing installation installation is not recognised Quit - F3

If no hard drives are recognised then clearly you have a serious problem.

    Post back with an update.
