Am currently running ZoneAlarm, Norton AntiVirus, Spy Sweeper, Spyblaster and Spybot Search and Destroy. All have protected my computer well but I'm wondering if there is one or two software programs that can be recommended that will do all that the named five will do? With the exception of NAV and Spy Sweeper, the other programs are the free type. I've been lead to believe that the Norton Internet Security might do the job? Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hello rebar,
You're talking about a suite which isn't one or two progams but a group of programs that work under one GUI (user interface) which will use system resources needed to run the group.

My personal opinion is I would avoid Symantec.

Do searches on Norton - Symantec on this Board - that'll give you some idea about it.

Like you, I also use an a/v, a firewall, Spyblaster (I assume you meant SpywareBlaster ) and Spybot Search and Destroy.

While you are looking for a program(s) that fits your requirements, you might want to consider these other free programs I also use:

    Hardware Router

To protect your system during a power outage, you may want to use a surge suppressor that ALSO offers use an
Uninterruptible Power Supply . = "This provides a few minutes of back-up power to allow you to shut down in an orderly manner in case the power goes out. UPS systems are available in a variety of power levels, expressed in VA (voltage amperes). "

Whenever my cable goes out and I have to switch to dialup backup, I turn off the router, and turn on AnalogX PortBlocker

    Ad-Aware

    SUPERAntiSpyware

    AnalogX Script Defender

    WinPatrol

An important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use
( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates +

Thanks to all for the suggestions and comments. I guess I'm just over cautious but like to check once in awhile for better ways of doing the job. Thanks again ...

    Hello rebar,

Thanks for the response back :)

Your current setup is just fine.

I understand your wish for a single application which would theoretically make your life easier.

The problem with NIS is it would add an order of complexity to your system, not simplify it. I suggested a search on Symatec for the reason that you would see what happens when NIS breaks down, usually a part of it, which in turn affects other parts.

With defenses spread out among different software, if one breaks, the others are still doing their job.

The above is the debate between advantages/disadvantages of suites versus single purpose security software.

    Regards - Charles
