I can get to shared files on the target PC; I can print from a W2k PC to the printer on the target PC; From my XP laptop I can display the print queue window for this printer and watch the document entry submitted from the W2k PC hit the queue, print, and then disappear. But when I try and print to it, I just get the following error:

"Your file could not be printed due to an error on \\kitchenpc\PRINTER on Ne09 "

The target PC is ME based and my XP laptop is from work, meaning I only have so much control over things on it.

    Any ideas?

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

    Welcome to the forum.

The first thing I'd go for is drivers. So start by downloading the latest drivers from the printer manufacturer's web site and try using those. You can change the drivers via the advanced tab in the printer properties on the XP system.

I myself gave up on ANY SHARING a long time ago. I used to have a printer installed on this machine ( XP ) and set to be shared ( 2 98SE ). YUCKS !!!!

I already had a Router so I just got a new printer that plugged into it. Now any one of the 3 machines can use it at anytime.

Believe me. It may be a bit more costly but setting things up so that no one machine depends on the other for anything has proven well worth it.

I have an HP5850 Printer which plugs directly into my Router.

Thanks - Well I got a lttle bit further. The printer is an HP Deskjet 5550 and I am not using Office. Based on the 1st article, I reinstalled the printer both by displaying the ME shares and then by creating a local port. The print request showed in the queue window as if it were printing. In fact the status was "Printing." However after about 45 seconds it disappeared and no document printed. By the way, I can print to a very old Okidata attached to the W2k PC. Since the W2K PC can print to the 5550, I tried sharing that print-share and then printing to it. Basically the same thing happened [i.e. the print request showed in the queue window as if it were printing. In fact the status was "Printing." However after about 45 seconds it disappeared and no document printed.]

Any more ideas? Could it be the fact that the 5550 is attached to the ME PC? I think it could be related to security; i.e it is not an issue with the W2k PCs - they can print to the shared 5550 just fine.

The fact that you see a print queue does not mean you are connected to the printer. What you are viewing is the queue for this printer in your computer's print spooler.

This may be a name resolution problem. Try connecting to the printer via:

    \\ipaddress\PRINTER

Where ipaddress is the ipaddress of kitchenpc. For example:

    \\192.168.0.100\PRINTER

If this works, I'd check that you have "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" enabled in the WINS section of the TCP/IP properties of your network connection.

Success. It turned out to be a combination of installing a new ME driver (I guess, since when I brought up the ME printer window, the 5550 had disappeared so I had to reinstall) and a password (maybe, since I created a MAP and told the system to remember the password....although that wasn't required on the W2K PC when I access the 5550 from there).

    Thanks to everyone.
