I can´t use my computer more then 30 seconds before the cpu raises to 99%. Please check my log file, is it a virus or a trojan of some kind.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS Bellse:)

Multiple svchost processes is a normal condition. What is the name of the process that the cpu usage increases on? Did the high usage begin after installing a new software program or update, or any other event that you might remember?

    Hello Bellse,

XP "bundles" services under SVCHOST.EXE. To see exactly what is running in each instance of svchost:

Open a cmd box: start > run > type cmd > ok and type or copy/paste:

    tasklist /svc > c:\tasklist.txt

tasklist.exe is only on XP-pro, so if running Home you'll need to download it along with the instuctions from here: http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp.htm Scroll a bit - its the 2nd utility. Once downloaded, move tasklist.exe to C:\Windows\System32

EDIT: forgot to add - a .txt file will be written to the C drive: tasklist.txt which can be opened with Notepad.

To relate the Task Manager entries and the tasklist.txt entries: they are tied together thru the PID number. Make sure that in Task Manager the PID is showing. If not, click on view > Select Columns.

Hi Dave, long time no see :)

    Regards - Charles

    Hello Bellse,

Which of these processes is taking up your resources?

Look in TM > Process tab.

One possible problem is WINWORD.EXE which by name belongs to Office but could be a trojan.

Do a search for WINWORD.EXE and list all the instances.

First, unhide hidden files and extensions and hidden system files as well:

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab, scroll down to Show hidden files and tick.

Uncheck Hide extensions for known files types.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

When using XP's search - use the option to search hidden files/folders.

The anti malware mavens will look at these results along with your HJT log and advise on any clean up procedures.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Bellse,

You have at least some remnants of a Look2Me infection, if not an active infection. Lets see what we can find. Follow the instructions in the following link and post the Look2MeDestroyer.txt log, as well as a new HijackThis log.

    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/28/

Were you able to see which process(es) are showing a rise in CPU usage?
