Here I am again with another problem that must be related to Vista.

EVERY time that I open Netscape 7.2 I get a pop-up advising that Netscape is not currently the default browser, etc.

I uncheck the box asking to check at startuup next time. I hit the button saying YES that I want Netscape to be my default browser.

I also went into Preferences and on the Navigator tab I hit the button about making Netscape my default browser thinking that would solve the problem. NOT so.

Any other suggestions?

I am just guessing, since I don't have Vista. Are you running Netscape as Administrator? May be you can find out from the Properties of the shortcut.
They are not going to fix Netscape, but, I have had a similar problem with Firefox and Thunderbird, especially the nightlies which are test versions.
Vista is going to give headaches to a lot of people, and, the effect is trickling down to other OS.
By the way, do you know what because default, when you lose it in Netscape?

Not sure I understand your last sentence.

I just logged on again and got the same darned pop-up. It didn't do it EVER on my old PC.

I'll work on it and let you know. Perhaps someone else has a clue.

Thanks.

By the way, do you know what because default, when you lose it in Netscape?.
If you mean that sentence, I should have worded a bit more clearly:By the way, do you know which browser because default, when you lose it in Netscape?.
If you lose default in Netscape, you must have reverted to another browser.
In my cae I knew exactly that Firefox1.5.0.10 stole default from Firefox2.0.0.2, and Thunderbird(mail)2.0pre stole it from Thunderbird1.5.0.10. You will not find out which one, unless you check it out, after finding out that NS lost default.
In my case, I found out that a Theme in 1.5.0.10 was causing the problem. I, just, reverted to to the default theme, and order was restored.
For mail, I had to take more drastic measures, like ridding of the offending software.

I was going to check FireFox next. But I had both installed on the XP PC and NEVER received that message.

I am getting frustrated.

Well, I checked FireFox to make sure it was not setup as the Default browser.

I keep checking the box in Netscape preferences and doing the same routine when the message pops up when I first open Netscape. I'm still getting the same little nuisance.

What would I accomplish besides additional problems if I re-installed without uninstalling the program I just installed?

Yes, I checked IE earlier. It wasn't set for the default either.

It's such a bothersome little issue but I can't figure out why after all these years this would come up. Just a new PC and new OS. Beats me.....

Just a new PC and new OS. . I have been staying away from Macs precisely because they are not compatible with old versions of certain software.
vista has caused havoc with even recent versions of certain software. The fact that something is old does not assure the user that it is going to work everywhere. Far from it.

You're right about that.

I did not want to tackle Vista yet but had no choice unless I ran all over the place looking to see who still had machines with XP.

My old PC, which I am still using to get all the tweaks etc off, had what I thought was a serious problem. Not sure if it was the hard drive or the motherboard. Just didn't want to pay big repair bucks for a 5 year old machine.

Microsoft, for some silly reason just changed things enough to make it complicated. I'm not able to conquer those issues yet.

Netscape is what giving me all the problems. All the fonts are small and my eyes are going to give out soon. I've looked for every option and now I am looking for the option to customize the toolbars.

Thanks to you and Ramona for all the help with the bookmarks and address book.

I am, really, worried that I may be in your boat, sooner than I want. i had a good year to learn about XP, but Vista is too new. However, I gave up on NS7.2 almost exactly one year ago. I did look back, and reinstalled it to see what other people have to put up with, but I don't recommend NS7.2, when there a lot of new stuff around. Again, sorry that I cannot help you more than this.

vegaspat,

If you're still using Netscape for mail only, then I encourage you to install Thunderbird. You won't lose anything in the process, and in fact Thunderbird will automatically migrate Netscape Mail to Thunderbird for the default Profile.

If you have more than one Profile, there is a process for that also, which automatically migrates Netscape Mail to Thunderbird for additional Profiles.

vegaspat,

More thoughts on your problem:

The Default browser is the one set up to handle:
URL:HypertextTransfer Protocol
Netscape looks specifically at the Application entry in the DDE section of the File Types dialog.

The Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\HTTP\Shell\Open\ddeexec\Application

Open Netscape:

Go to Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System
Under Protocols
Enable: http: and https:
Under File Types
Enable: HTML

Go to Edit | Preferences | Navigator
Click on the "Set Default Browser" button once again

Close Netscape - Reopen, and hopefully this will remove the annoying popup.

If not, then try this:

It is sometimes necessary to make I.E. the default first
Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
Click on the Programs Tab
ENable: Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser

Open I.E. and answer YES when it asks if it is to be the default. Then close it, and open Netscape. It should prompt for being the default. Answer YES, then UNcheck the I.E. box in Control Panel, so it doesn't ask again.

More Registry Keys to check:

Click on: Start | Run
In the blank field type: regedit

Check these Registry Keys:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command]

When you open the "command" folder, is this what you see:
C:\PROGRA~1\Netscape'\Netscape\Netscp.exe /m %1

If not, then right click on the word "Default" and select Modify
Copy the above "command" folder path: C:\PROGRA~1\Netscape'\Netscape\Netscp.exe /m %1
Paste the path into the blank "Modify" field.

Exit the Registry, and Reboot your PC.

It may take a couple of days for you to know that the problem is fixed (if any of the above are your problems).

I find I am more than a little rusty on making Netscape the default browser, so forgive the additions...
