    Hi

Sorry for delay. I was working.

    Always a plan B.

Tell me please if the computer you took off the network (not the laptop -- the PC) is NTFS or FAT32.

When you open "my computer" hilight the C drive.
It will tell you at left if FAT32 or NTFS

    Thanks :)

    Hi

The old computer is NTFS. I have since tried to make two more bootable cds from the laptop, both were successfully made, and neither works in the broken computer. My father thinks it might be that since autoplay was not working well even when the computer was working, that is still the case. I have the cd drive booting first, but i can tell that it is not booting because it doesn't make a sound and the lights don't flash like they do when it's reading a disc. Is there something I should do, like remove it and try it out in another computer to see if it is not working? I could buy another if that is the case. I'm guessing you'll be on late tonight as usual so I'll try to get on then so we can try some new things.

    Hi,

Can you hook that CDRom drive to the old computer and see if it will work?
See if you can boot that PC with your recovery disk you made.

No need to do anything on the old computer. Just see if the CDRom is working.

The autoplay on the broken PC has nothing to do with the CDRom not being able to boot with CDs.
AutoPlay is enabled/disabled within Windows itself and you are trying to boot with the CD which happens way before Windows has any control of the system.
Booting from CDRom is controlled by Bios.

Let me know what happens. :)

I put the cd in the old computer and it didn't work! It just said operating system missing or something like that. That's good. I bough 50 blank cds so I can try new ways. Here's what I did with Roxio: I clicked the option to make a bootable cd, and then I selected rc.iso like you said. And then I added the missing file, hal.dll, to the cd. It burned the cd just fine. So should I try Roxio again or try to do it manually? You did say there's a way to manually make a cd bootable correct? I'm all ears if there is... cuz an increasing amount of people are telling me I'm about to lose my entire c drive and I'm not giving up lol :p

    Hi,

    Forget Hal.dll for now.
I just wanna fix the broken boot.ini file since that was the last thing that was edited before the crash.
Broken boot.ini file can give hal.dll errors too.
I want to fix that first.

What version of Roxio does your Mom have?

    Thanks :)

    Hi,

Unless I'm wrong I don't think you can burn ISO files properly with this version of Roxio...
The CD you did burn; pop it in your mom's cd drive & let me know what you see on it.

    You should see:

    I386 <-- folder
    WIN51 <--file
    WIN51IC <-- file

If you see this it is burn't right.

    If not....

Download this & install it on your Mom's computer:
It should get along with roxio just fine. (its free)

    http://www.ntfs.com/downloads/IsoBurner-Setup.exe

    Once set up....
Right click on the RC.iso file you downloaded earlier> click "Burn ISO "
    Follow on-screen instructions.

Don't add any files to it or anything or it will not be bootable any more.

Once burnt see if you can boot the broken computer with it.

    /me crosses fingers

    Thanks :)
