    Hi,

I was recently affected by the worm W32/LCJump-A through a USB key that i had used on a uni computer. In 'My Computer' when i tried to access any drives ie C:\ and my ipod and usb key E:\ and F:\ an error message came up and wouldnt let me access it. I downloaded AVG which supposedly 'healed' these threats.

However now when i try and access any of the drives the 'open with' window appears and asks me to choose which program to open it with from a list. I tried selecting windows explorer as i can access the drives through windows explorer but this didnt work.

When i right click on the drives where there should be 'open' and 'explore' there is lots of strange symbols and letters like upside down question marks etc.

It seems as though the antivirus software got rid of the worm but didnt fix the bits of windows that it had messed about with.

Does anybody have any idea what to do?

    Thanks.

Tried system restoring both from command prompt and normally using different restore points but all times it when through all the motions but when i logged in again a message came up saying that system restore was unsuccessful and that no changes has been made to my computer. How annoying eh. Thanks anyway.

    Anybody got any ideas?

Try doing a repair install of XP.

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

    Suggestions only

    Reformat

    Divide the HD into partitions ( C: D: E: for example )

Keep NOTHING other than the OS on C:

    Everything else on D: E:

    Backups on CD and/or tape
