Click Start > click control panel > double click sounds and highlight any particular sound under sounds tab. If the play button (solid arrowhead under sounds window is not greyed out the hardware and drivers are ok. Click the play button (it should change shape to a solid square) with speakers turned on and if you hear a sound, fine; if not check your connection (wire from computer to speakers).

    usb install

I do not understand is your problem with reading the cd or the sound usb or both.

    Several points.

    1) USB is supposed to be universal - to be everything to everydevice and its is not

    2) The procedure for Windows 98 USB installs is entirely diffirent than for Windows XP
if not properly will not work

    3) You try the recommended way and if that does not work you try every other way one at a time and reboot.
sometime you get real deals on devices that would not set up easily and sometimes you actually had to ignore what the instructions told you never to do
    4) Sound is a real bugger to instal

First - make sure the device ( sound USB) is plugged in
look for the device in the device tree
if it is installed look to see that it has no exclamation marks or question marks beside it to indicate that is not installed properly.
It is possible that it will say that " the device is working properly " and you are not pointed towards it or even the mute is on. That would be simple.

If the device is not installed properly or drivers installed go from here

    - remove the device in the device manager
    - do not allow it to install
    - pull out usb - it is ok when running

    - turn off computer
    - install driver disk program
    - generally with windows 98 the standard procedure is to now turn off the computer. Reboot. When it is up plug in your usb and let it proceed.

You will probably need your windows 98 install disc
you will most likely need windows 98 second edition installed not windows 98 which is a seperate earlier product with less driver support
Someone is they are knowledgable and thorough may have placed the disc in your hardrive ( a copy in a folder)
See if you have or can go online and read the company's install instrucions
you may have to try to install a newer driver . Try the site of the company or driverguide.com/
I am assuming that you have the proper driver disk. Look at the model and
model version number on the usb sound card.
You may have to try installing as said previously in diffirent ways and then voila the sound will be there. Check standard things like are the cables in the right place in the sound card etc first before doing anything major.

    hope this helps

Installing sound can be very tricky.
After install check that you are pointed to the correct device.
Another thing to watch for is volume levels and that the mute is not checked.
A good test program for sound is to "Audio and Video setup" program in msn messenger to test sound setup.
