    My boss mentioned some software to me that he is going to try out, I hadn't heard of it before and was wondering if anyone here knows anything about it. It's a freebie for personal use, called Sandboxie. It's available at this website;
    http://www.sandboxie.com

I'm just looking for opinions if anyone has any experience with it before I give it a go.

From the looks of the software, I would assume that there will be a significant overhead. In all honesty I would use an Antivirus,anti-spyware, and a popup blocker should do the same thing, with less overhead.

    Hi Bill,

I have it installed and play with it every once in a while.

Resource usage depends on how many programs are sandboxed.

I only ran IE sandboxed and the memory usage from three Sandboxie processes totaled about 6 MBs suprisingly. It does use a lot of disk room though because all the data goes into the sandbox - cookies, TIF info - everything; lots of supprises in watching what websites download and what areas they touch.

After the session ends and anything wanted is extracted, you have the option to delete that disk area.

As far as I can tell, works as advertised and no problems. Do have to "play" with it to extract what you want to keep after the session - in other words, you have to learn how to do that.

Lots of info at Wilders http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php Do a search on Sandboxie.

    Regards - Charle

    Hi,

I have used Sandboxie for well over a year now.
It's much better than when I first got it.
Charles is right,it does a decent job keeping garbage out of
    you files and registry.
However,as is mentioned,it does build up its files and the registry during use.
But that shouldn't be a problem with today's large drives.
Besides, you're really supposed to wipe out all that stuff after
a day's use or so (Save what you want and delete the rest.

You don't need it for trusted sites such as WindowsBBS :)
and others. Not only that, but you want to save the cookies.

For general surfing it's a good idea.

    Pete.

Wow, thanks for all the replies on this. Charles, I'll check out the link you posted and pass the info on to my boss. It sounds like interesting software, I may have to play around with it some.

    Hi Bill,

    You're welcome.
Each person and setup requires their own solution.
They're all just tools,it depends on what you want to do.
For me,the keyword is and always will be,having a choice :)

Virtual machines,by their nature, will always be slower than
other setups, since a full OS is running along with the VM.

The links above (my previous post)will keep you busy for a while.
If you want more, check out Kiosk or Internet Cafe software :)

    Pete.
