Not clear on that at all.

A new HD doesn't have anything on it - so what are you repairing?

I don't know why but putting the new harddrive in allowed me to access the Windows XP recovery consul where I could not before. Maybe it was the Caldera software on the Seagate CD that got it going...I don't know.

When I tried to setup XP on the first try after the new drive was installed I got an error message saying XP could not install so I rebooted and did a fixmbr at the Recovery consul and everything started working - why? I don't know but I'm happy it did.
