Hi sdeannas,

Ok great, we have soemthing to work with.

From what research I've been able to do, this is some sort of networking error - so, if possible, take Billy Bob's advice and disconnect the systems.

In meantime, we'll get one of the networking gurus to look.

BB, looks like you have the right of it again :)

Regards - Charles

I don't think this is a network problem. The log appears to work from bottom to top. That is the lowest entry in the list occurred first, then the one above that etc.

At 5:47:20 PM I guess there has been a reboot. The previous entry is almost an hour before. The 5:47:20 error is
I think most of the logs above that are cascading off that initial error. DCOM can't start because you are in safe mode and once you can't start DCOM the other network services fail to start too.

So my eye is drawn to the error before:
eeCrtl, SAVRTPEL, SPBBCDrv, and SYMTDI all appear to be Symantec apps. I'd suggest you uninstall your Symantec/Norton software (anti-virus?) in safe mode and see if you can boot then (disconnect the PC from the network while your running without anti-virus).

I also wonder what Fips relates to. This link suggests it relates to a partitioning utility. It might be worth tracking that application down too and uninstalling it.

It is possible that these apps are also failing because DCOM isn't starting, but I think uninstalling your symantec software is a good start.

Thanks for looking at this Reggie. Lost sight of the fact that the system could only run in Safe Mode.

I hope this turns out to be just "Norton strikes again" and not a hardware issue.

?

where would i find the Symantec Icon to delete it... i found an icon labeled 'Symantec LiveUpdate', but when i try to delete it, it will not delete. i have tried to drag it to recycle bin, that didn't work. i tried rt clicking, but no delete option...

if i go to c:program files, and deleted the folder named Norton AntiVirus, would that solve problem? and remember i am in safe mode...

also, i have two folders... one named norton antivirus, and another named Symantec... should i delete them both? and if so, how, nav will not let me delete file named 'NavShExt.dll'

No No No - lose the concept of Delete

One Uninstalls - Not Deletes!

;)

Go to Add/Remove Software in the Control Panel

I didn't read all posts on this- did you search symantec & norton. then right click on results-properties-find target-- look for uninstall on each result.

As Rockster says, first place to look to uninstall is Add/Remove programs in Control panel. Only look for another way to uninstall if Add/Remove doesn't remove the software.

add-remove is the right answer. I just thought that you had tried that. i have found some things that did not completly remove all parts.

This is a community forum where all comers are welcome and all input is welcomed. Please don't interpret this as anything other than a friendly comment. Norton (almost all versions) is a very invasive program and it puts little parts and pieces of itself all over the place. Improper or incomplete removal can render a machine close to worthless. We all have to be careful here when giving advice or guidance - if one isn't absolutely sure about something, it may be best to excercise some caution. As to Norton, I'll send you here so you can read a little more detail on its removal.

I have looked through and did not see this mentioned so I would like to add some of my own ideas/learnings.
.
For quite some time now I have used a program called RegSeeker.

After un-installing stuff I run it and tell it to look for something like ( in this caxe.Norton/Symantic..

i have found it ABSOLUTELY AMAZING what may be left over from an un-install. Especially one that my not have gone it right and/or installed more than once.

And also after UN-INSTALLING the software I do MANUALLY delete the folder. Then run Regseeker.

The key point is that you do things like reg cleaning and deleting anything left over after you have run the uninstall from Add/remove programs. If you start deleting files before running an uninstall routine, there is a very good chance that the uninstall program will fail and you'll have a lot more stuff to track down and uninstall manually.

The process you should follow is:
1. Use the Remove option in Control Panel's Add/Remove programs utility
2. If there is no entry for the program in Add/Remove programs look for an Uninstall option in the start menu group for this program and run that.
3. If there isn't an uninstall option in the start menu group look for an uninstall program in the program folder or run the install program again and see if that offers an uninstall option.
4. If you can't find an uninstall utility, look in the programs documentation, help system or website for an uninstall procedure and follow that. If none is documented try contacting the program manufacturer's support team and ask for an uninstall procedure.
5. If you cannot find an uninstall program nor a documented uninstall procedure, then you have little choice but to uninstall the program manually. However, fortunately the number of programs that don't have uninstall procedures are extremely small nowadays, so you should rarely get to this point. There are utilities that will do much of the manual removing for you, and this is probably a good route to follow.

Registry cleaning utilities are good at cleaning up any loose end, but after you've uninstalled the program. Don't use a reg cleaning utility to uninstall a program.

Experience, Trial & Error AGREE with the above. The key word(s) being AFTER the uninstall.

But as I believe I mentioned before, if the un-install does not work properly , delete the folder before cleaning the reg.

I became well aware of what a normol "add-remove" of norton can do. i bought a 98se. it had a expired version of norton on it. it removed parts of the registry. I had a difficult time of finding missing pieces some DLL's and the shwapi.dll also a vxd. and i did do it through the add remove. it truly embeds it's self verrrry deep. i don't know after thinking of that i think anything i found in search i would try to find out what else relies on each result of search. i'm sorry if i didn't go into more detail or if my answer left out and was misleading as to the problems that can occur. I should have read entire post before saying anything.

RegSeeker would be a great help because it will tell you what it is looking for and where it is supposed to be.

new problem... i can't remove anything in safe mode, and pc will not start in normal mode... does this mean i am going to have to delete everything from pc and start over? :O

also, i am able to run chkdsk, but not with any other commands such as /f ... pc keeps saying 'Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)'

i have no window open, except for the command window, and i have logged off all other users. now what? :O

Hi sdeannas,

I think its down to repairing the installation: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Everything else is just a spinning of the wheels it seems.

You'll need a XP disc for this. In one of the earlier posts in this thread, I mentioned the possibility of this procedure.

If this is successful, you will not lose your user data, you will have to re install your programs though.

The next step if a repair is not successfull, is a complete re install. In that case, you will lose everything on the hard drive.

Regards - Charles
