Have you seen this from the software support site:
    whole faq:
    http://www.astonshell.com/aston/faq.htm

    link from the above
    http://www.astonshell.com/aston/faq.htm#16

or this cutNpaste also from the above
Q: I want to switch back to the default Windows shell.
A: Run Shell Swapper from Aston Start Menu and set Explorer as a shell. Alternatively run %Aston%\Shswdos.exe in MS-DOS mode.

Try using task manager to start explorer.exe:
Hit cntrl/alt/del to bring up taskmanager
From the toolbar choose "new task ">run> and type explorer.exe. Alternatively you can browse to *:\windows\explorer.exe and double click on it when found.

    ------------
No need to panic. If need be you can reset explorer as the shell but As I am unsure how deep the program goes into the registry or what keys may be involved, I feel using the methods suggested from the support site is the best idea.

The Registry key involved would be:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In that key, look in the right pane for the string "Shell" and verify that the value data is explorer.exe

If anything else is there, change it by double clicking the string and editing the value data to read explorer.exe.

It seems that more than one user has done this in the past and the site has a fix....see:
    http://www.astonshell.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5080

The fix is a zip when extracted has a reg patch which when double clicked on will make the registry shell repair for you. I know some people are screamish about manual editing the registry themselves and regpatches make this painless.

CAUTION!!! The hkey fix offered by the site differs from suferdude2's in that HKEY_CURRENT_USER is referenced rather than Local_Machine

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "shell "= "explorer.exe "

Looks like you may have to manually run regedit after all and look for the hkeys and values.

I think that fix they offer must be for something other than XP.

I don't find that data string in XP Home where they are writing the new data to. I'd advise caution and more checking before running it.

Well I'll be darned. I didn't even notice the difference in hkeys. Caution is right. I have edited my previous thread to reflect such. It looks like a manual registry looksee will be required anyway. I will leave the hkey referenced in the regpatch, (offered by the software support site as the fix), just in case this hkey location is used or added by the software shell replacement. Since you'll be looking you might as cover both bases.

    Let's go with this:

If the key they list exists in your Registry, use their fix - if it doesn't exist use the location I offered and either manually edit it or edit their reg file to reflect the different key. It may well be that the key doesn't exist on my system because I am the only user.

What alerted me was that they are using the wrong Regfile header line for XP. It'll work no doubt but I always wonder when someone isn't up to date on the registry hot licks. ;)

I'll have to test that fix for academic relief. It'll probably work - I would be surprised if they would present something as a fix that was badly flawed. :D

I had anticipated the fix would be:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\[COLOR="Black"]Microsoft[/COLOR]\Windows

    NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
     "Shell "= "explorer.exe "

I couldn't make their fix work.

I deleted my own key and logged off. Sure enough, no Desktop or Taskbar - just wallpaper.

I ran their reg file from Task Manager, then logged off and back on - still nothing but wallpaper.

I replaced the original key that I deleted, logged off and back on - voila! Desktop and Taskbar back to normal.

I then deleted their new data string from my Registry as a cleanup measure.

    kush0,

If you're not comfortable editing the Registry manually, let me know right away and I'll post a download file that you can use. Do make it quick since I'm way past my bedtime here in the CST time zone. ( 12:13 am now)

Edit: I'll give you the link and then I can get some sleep:

    SD2shell

Download that and note the location it goes to. Then either use Task manager to run it or start Windows explorer with Task manager and then find the file and double click on it. Answer yes when asked to allow it to merge the data into your registry. Then log off and back on - you should be good to go.

Even easier, just run the file from the web site rather than downloading it. Just click on Run instead of Save and it'll get right to work.

    Hi Kusho,
Did you download the regpatch offered by suferdude
    SD2shell
and follow his instructions about either starting explorer.exe using the keyboard combo of cntrl/alt/del and taskmanager" or just running the patch when the offer of "saving or opening" is made?

The patch from Aston support does not work for xp. Perhaps it was meant for another OS such as win95 or win98.

    Hello KushO,
I see you have checked into the board a couple of times since my last thread, ^up above this one. How are you coming along on this? If your having problems or don't understand how to do what has been suggested, please don't be shy and ask for any additional help you may need. We have all been beginners and there is nothing to big or little that can not be asked here. Further, if you have any other questions regarding your original issue, just ask. This problem should have been relatively easy to fix, I am curious what the possible complications could be....:)
