No problem - please understand, my lengthy post was just to explain my thinking to BillyBob because he made a good point about the printer and the network connection even though I thought it was a little pre-mature to start disconnecting and isolating everything. Don't interpret what I said as any kind of criticism towards you. What I was trying to do was "read between the lines" and explain that reading technique.

Since you can get into safe mode, my next advice would be to run CHKDSK /R from a command prompt. Go to Run and type CMD then at the flashing cursor, type CHKDSK /R and note the space between the K and the /. Lets also wait for Charlesvar to get back and confirm.

My thinking for the benefit of all participants here is to try this and if unsuccessful run a FIXBOOT from the repair console and if still unsuccessful, consider a repair installation. We also haven't looked at re-sizing the system restore folder to see if we can bring this back to life and we haven't looked at items running at startup using Mike Lin's StartupCPL. I only mention this stuff now because if we aren't careful, Deanna is going to get hit with everything under the kitchen sink coming from all different directions. If there is any disagreement lets get it out in the open. Please be patient Deanna, I'm just trying to avoid your getting pulled in too many different directions.

    Regards,
    ;)

sdeannas, my suggestion was as much aimed at Rockster2U, Charlesvar and the others. They will take those into consideration. You can come back to my suggestions later if you still seem to be stuck.

Rockster2U wants to check some areas, so follow those.

Feb 17 was a while ago, the update may or may not be a factor.

Do Rockster's tests and let him know the results.

    I will follow what's happening.

    Hi sdeannas,

Can you get into safe mode? Forget "with networking ".

You can try running chkdsk another way:

In safe mode: click My Computer > right click on the C drive > properties > Tools > Error checking > Check now > in the dialog box > tick both check disk options.

    Regards - Charles

hey Charles, i went to my pc, rt clicked on C:, properties, tools, checked both boxes, and then start but i received 'The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule this disk check to occur the next time you restart the pc?'

i don't know what to do, when i restart pc it doesn't start like it should... now what? :O

    Hi sdeannas,

Ok, see if you can get into the event viewer:

Right click on My Computer, then Manage.

On the left you will see Event Viewer. Expand that (click on the plus sign).

Then click on System. See if there are any errors being logged by the system when the problem occurs.

Right clicking on a line and then clicking on Properties will give you a window with more info concerning that line.

You'll see in the top section right below the down arrow, a text graphic sysmbol. Clicking on that will place the error info text into your clipboard (memory).

Bring up Notepad and right click and paste, that will transfer it to Notepad. You can then paste the text into your next post here.

May give us a clue as to what's going on.

I think the next step may be a repair of the installation. In order to do that, need the XP OS disc. Not a restore to factory settings which most OEM's ship with the system nowadays.

    Regards - Charles

Just check if you may need to make the "safe mode" selection to get it to run.

I am back with more of my wild ideas.

Doesn't the above say that there is a possibility of the other machine accessing something on the machine in question ?

Or even maybe a running program ?

For the lack of something to do and maybe stur up other ideas I will put a $10bet on an interaction between machines.

Could you post what seems like repitative errors? I posted instructions on how to.

Did you run the HD diags from the HD manufacturer?

We need to have some indication of what kind of error(s) this is - hardware or software.

    Regards - Charles

No, not a whole lot of them. Just enough to see what kind of errors there are.
