i shut down my computer, then i came back a few hours later and realized that it never really shut down completely. it said, "windows is shutting down..." so i held the power button to shut it down. After about a minute, i restart the computer, but it wouldn't get to the user menu. After windows starts to load, it never makes it to the main program. how do i get my computer back on track?!?!?

    thank you

    joey

Press F8 when booting, brings up a selection menu, select "last known good configuration'>

thanks for the feedback, i tried that, it still brings the blank black screen, i also tried booting in the safe mode, but it just brings up a bunch of numbers and what not, i dont want to reload the xp to its default settings, cause i would hate to loose all my info on the comp

    thanks again,

OUCH !!! I have a strong feeling that something that was running may have refused to shut down properly which in turn stopped Windows from shutting down properly.

Having had somewhat the same shutdown.restart problem a long time ago is why I do not load anything more than what I really need at boot up. And do my best to make sure everything is shut down before I shut down Windows. Helps BIG-TIME to keep down the conflicts.

I do not believe you have anything to loses if you boot to DOS ( or the CD ) and do a reinstall of WIndows. Just make sure it goes into the existing directory.

To expand on what BillyBob posted - by a reinstall he was referring to a Repair installation - the second Repair option offered when you boot from the installation CD.

To expand on my own wild ideas.

Do the above from a POWER OFF state. Not just a reboot. This will make more sure that RAM is clear.
