I have googled and read the other threads here but still do not find my answer. On several sites it gives you the step by step instructions of how to install it and it just ends with now you can share your files, but it doesn't say HOW what you need to tell the other person so that they can access them.

I have installed IIS on my computer, no problem, do the ftp local host cmd and it shows running and shows all my files.

I am not knowlegeable on this and can't seem to find my answer on the WWW so if someone could explain to me this.

Once I have set this up with the default port of 21 which I have opened in my Linksys Router what do I do next? How do you access the files from another computer? Do I have to have a domain and if so how do I go about doing that?

I want to be able to give my friends an ftp:// address so that they can access some of my files.

Setting up IIS was a breeze, at least it's running so I assume I did it right, but from that point on it's Greek to me. How do I know what my ftp address is? Is there more I need to do besides open the default port 21 on my router?

If you have any suggestions please give me clear step by step instructions on what I should do next, I want someone to be able to access my computer. I have gone to several sites that gave me my own address such as joyce@homeftp.net but don't understand from there what I should do besides when I set that up it knocked me off the internet and I had to reset my router to factory default and start over so I don't understand what that did when I signed up dyndns.com as suggested in the Linksys instructions.

    Any help greatly appreciated. TIA

Thanks but that is not what I need. I am running Windows XP Pro and have set up the IIS, I have given the default website a name, which is what I thought someone would type in their web browser and be able to see my files.

I can type in http://localhost or ftp://local host in my browser and see all the files that I have added to the IIS directory.

Now what I need is a web address to give to others to access my directory from their web broswer.

Here is the way I understand it. By installing IIS on my computer I have set up a mini server through MS. Now I want to access this server from another location. Do I have to have a domain in order to do this? I thought by setting it up that I was using a MS server and giving it a name would direct it to my computer but evidently this is not the case. I have read all these things about how you had to have it directed to your WAN not LAN. Is this what the dyndns.com does sets your router with your current WAN? I followed the instructions given at http://www.learnthat.com/courses/computer/windowsxp/iis/default.asp which was more detailed than some of the other sites I've read.

And does this have anything to do with ASP.net which I do not have installed or have it disabled.

It's seems so simple yet so complicated. :(

That link doesn't work. I have been reading all night. I finally got the linksys router configured.

Now I just need to know what address to type into the browser to connect to my files. According to all the information I have read it just says that you type in ftp://your isp but in the setup of IIS you can name your ISP and my understanding is that by giving it a name all a person has to do is type in ftp://myname

I have no idea, I wish someone could tell me what I need to do to make this work. Do I need a domain? I thought having a server was the domain but I'm not doing something right or not understanding right. All the sites I have read and it has been MANY including MS do not give a clear understanding of how someone accesses IIS server on the host computer.

Hold on you must have changed the link, I have it now, maybe it will give me some better insight, will let you know. Thanks

Well actually that was not help at all, but thanks. I am now thinking that maybe I have to compose a web page with front page or simular program to post on the web, but I'm still not sure and I'm still confused.

This isn't something I've ever messed with so no guarantees here but I would think you'd just use your IP address. My guess is that you'd have to use the IP of router not the computer. The router's address is the one that's seen on the net, the computer's is only seen locally and is assigned to it by the router unless you have the computer set up to use a static IP. Your router configuration software probably will tell you what it is, I don't know. Otherwise, just click hereto find out what it is.

Then, type that in an IE address bar or whatever program you use for ftp. For instance, if your IP address was 12.220.33.147, in an IE address bar type ftp://12.220.33.147:21 . The 21 at the end is the port number you have set up for ftp. More than likely you'll have to have your router set up to forward all requests at port 20 to whichever computer is running the server.

Keep in mind that your IP address (the one for the router) may or may not change from time to time. If your ISP doesn't use static addresses (most don't anymore), it may change when it comes time to renew the license. Mine isn't static but rarely changes but it's something you might want to keep in mind. You may want to make sure the computer you are using for this uses a static IP. That can change too if it's set to use DHCP. The router may assign it a new address from time to time. I don't know for sure but, again, it's something to keep in mind.

As I said, I'm not real sure about this. It's kind of a wild guess but I don't know how else you'd access it other than to use your IP address. Can't hurt to try it.;)
