    Any of this look bad?
I also downloaded Killbox and I'm correctly running a scan on http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/

Can anyone give me some steps to follow to clean my system?
Also how do you boot XP in safemode?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Ok, lets not get ahead of ourselves here. Please do not run any tools unless told to do so specifically by one of the analysts. You can cause more harm than good with a single click.

I don't see anything really bad on the system, just some poker stuff, which may or may not be bad. Usually we like to remove all sorts of things like that tho.

What is it that is telling you that there is a possible 'backdoor'? AVG or something else? Let us know.

We'll address a few things in the log.

:arrow:I need to see the 'header' for HJT, it should read something like this:
    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 12:56:02, on 23/04/2004
Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)

We need this info to complete our diagnosis.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed. If they are not, continue with instructions
    PartyGaming
    UltimateBet
    EmpirePokerMaster
    Doyles Room Poker

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

I've removed the poker software you asked (using add/remove programs). I will follow your instructions on the HiJackThis related stuff as soon as I get home from work.

    Some concerns in the meantime:
    - ctfmon.exe (this keeps loading itself into startup when I look via msconfig)
    - I've setup my computer so I can remote desktop when not at home. I've changed from the standard port. I have port forwarding through my router. Wonder if this is a big security risk still. I've turned off remote access for the time being till I get my system clean and secure again.
    - I'm also consider buying or upgrading to the full version of some anti-spyware and anti-virus software and possibly a software firewall as an added measure. Can you give some suggestions for some before I decide to spend some money on these items? It seems some of them must be purchased so you can schedule them to scan on a frequent basis. Where the free ones must be manually scanned.

    Thanks much so far.
    I appreciate the Help greatly.

    Sincerly,
    Paul

You can read about ctfmon.exe from MS on this page. I've learned to live with it.
You can stay plenty clean and secure with freebies. It's more important you watch where you surf, don't open emails and things like that. 99 times out of 100, that's where users get nailed.

A software firewall would of course increase your security some. Tho there are others who think a router is more than enough. I have both.

Ok, that log looks free and clear, everything ok now?

We have 3 more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol 2007 v11.1.2007.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

I went to print out your last replay to keep track of my steps and I had some problems printing. Said the services for spooling wasn't running. I tried to start it and got this error:

Could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

    any suggestions?

When I have time I'm going to read most of your tutorials on the software you suggested. It's a lot to digest all at once.

I haven't tried to install musicmatch yet I'll keep you updated.

I think my system if finally cleaned up.
I installed and ran the following programs. Rebooting between each.

    Ad-aware
    Avast
    avg-anti-spyware
    avg free
    Index.dat Suite (Automatic)
    spybot
    spyware blaster
    windows defender
    winpatrol (very nice program)

I also added a script blocker to Firefox (pretty awesome Add-on)
I also added the McAfee Site Advisor too.
    Doubt I need both.

Let me know if all of these are over kill. Maybe I can slim down on the amount of applications.

Anyways this is my most recent HJT log:

I'm going to do the same process for my other XP username and my girlfriends Computer just to be safe. I may post that stuff tomorrow.

    A thousand thank you's
I didn't realize how in the dark I was about Online Security until
    I found this forum.

    Paul

    P.S.
I got musicmatch 7.5 to work. I found out it was IE 7.0 causing the problem so I uninstalled that back to 6.0 and now it's fine. Leave it to Microsoft to ruin a MP3 player.

    Hi psiegel81
    Your log looks clean.

You are running 2 anti-virus programs, This can cause conflicts and is not a good idea.

    AVG Free
    Avast

Both are good programs, but you should only run one. Pick one and uninstall the other.

The other programs you have you should keep, make sure you keep them updated.

Opps...I just noticed you're running an old version of HJT, get the latest version, 1.99.1 from here

Also you can use WinPatrol to manage your start ups.

The only real potential problem with all those apps, is if you have TeaTimer running along with Defender, both are 'real time' monitors and you don't need them both. I'd stick with Spybot. Defender has not yet proven itself IMHO.

Got a question about all this software.

I'm not running Teatimer at the moment.
    I'm running Avast On-Access scanner.
    Can these both be run?

I'm basically looking for the optimal setup with not too my programs.

Not sure which to use Avast or AVG for antivirus (both can schedule via itself or windows schedule)

I may remove windows defender if it isn't very good like were hinting.

    I like spybot and ad-aware.
Winpatrol is a keeper for sure.
Spywareblaster seems to work fast and easy to use.

    Just so many!!

When scheduling so I run scans daily for both viruses and spyware?

    ;)

    Thanks,
    Paul

The good thing about most of the apps we recommend is that they don't use much, if any resources.

    WinPatrol: No noticeable footprint
    SpywareBlaster: No noticeable footprint
Ad-Aware: Only uses resources when scanning
Spybot: Even with TeaTimer on, not much of a hit in CPU
AVG AV & AS: AV & AS CPU usage when scanning, 'real time' protection very unobtrusive for AS, if you buy it
Avast: Don't know enough to offer opinion, but many like it
SiteAdvisor: Has been known to slow some machines down, because it calls out for info on sites with each click

So really what you have now is pretty low on a scale of CPU usage and you are very well protected.

Of course the best defense is using your noggin.

    Still having troubles

I started running Teatimer and have something is attacking my registry over and over. Teamtimer keeps blocking it though.

Here are the two I see from the dialog box that keeps popping up over and over.

    Resident denied change of {2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9818-009027A5CD4F}
(category User-specific browser toolbar) based on your black list

    and

Resident denied the change of ITBarLayout
(category User-specific browser toolbar) based on your black list

How should I begin with this problem?

I'm currently running TeaTimer and Winpatrol.
    Apps I have currently:
    Spybot
    Adaware
    AVG AV
    AVG AS
    Avast
    SpywareBlaster

Ok, if you just turned on TeaTimer, it may be reacting to previous changes made. Are the changes additions to or removal from the system?

You can fix the following line with HJT:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)

Cookies are not a threat, and you need not post them when they show up in any log.

And the SmithFraud finds are false\positives.
