I would appreciate it if anyone would give me some opinions of whether to purchase the PAID version of AVG Anti-spyware.

Is there that much difference in coverage/operation/protection to justify the cost. Does any one have any opinions/experiences on the advantages/disadvantages of either version.

    Thank you,
    Paul:confused:

There are two distinct advantages of buying AVG Anti-Spyware:
    • You get the 'real time monitoring'
    • auto updated feature
Beyond that, the free will detect and remove in the same manner, the same threats.

Depending on if you have any other 'real time' monitoring, and depending on how well you have conditioned yourself to avoid known infection traps, such as P2P, pr0n and warez sites(not saying all of those sites are infections laden, but many), dictates if you need the extra protection

And of course there is also the factor of contributing to the project. OK Grisoft is a commercial operation, but if you believe in supporting a company that supplies you with a valuable service then upgrading to the paid version is one way of doing that.

Stating the obvious perhaps, but I thought it worth mentioning that there are non-technical reasons too.

Oh and I'm no paragon. I'm currently running the free version on two of my PCs. :D

If I'm not mistaken, the free version doesn't have what used to be Ewido Anti Spyware as a component, while the paid version does.

AVG AnitSpyware - used to be Ewido, has a free version, trial period reverting to free scanner only.

Are you saying they changed the primary scanning engine from the original ewido one to something that AVG brought to the table?

In so far as the way the trial works, that has not changed, you still get the fully functioning trial, then it loses the 'real time' monitoring and auto update feature, but still scans and removes.
