I have added an external monitor to my toshiba satellite laptop (celeron 1.10 GHz) with a Trident video accelerator CyberBlade XP Ai1 video adaptor card. I have tried various display settings, but the external monitor shows multiple overlapping desktops (internal monitor ok). All troubleshoots tell me everything is working fine ! Please help! Thanks

What version of Windows are you running. First, try windows update for hardware updates and let me know what happens.

Hi - running windows XP. The monitor is an old compaq 420s, so I would think the laptop should be up to driving the monitor....?

The laptop looks a little old too...
Have you tested the monitor on another pc?

veesik - Welcome to the Board :)

What are you trying to achieve? If you simply want the laptop display on an external monitor it is not usually necessary to add an external video card. Just plug the monitor into the D-sub socket and toggle the display options (laptop/laptop + external monitor/extrenal monitor using the Fn key and the monitor key.

If you want to spread the display over two monitors (laptop + external) that is a different matter and I have no idea if it can be done on a laptop.

Thanks Steve - yes, just plugging the monitor in should work, and it is working, but giving me what looks like several scans. I've tried different options for screen resolution , there is no option other than 60Hz for the refresh rate, so I don't know what's going on!

Thanks Pete - the internal screen on the laptop is a bit dodgy - keeps going blank - I think it's the switch triggered by lowering the screen, so I thought the easy option was a (free) external monitor, which was working recently on another PC not sure whether desktop or laptop.

Try reloading the video drivers for the laptop if you have them - if not try the Compaq site.

If the monitor cable is not wired internally to the monitor try another cable.

You may need to install drivers for the monitor.

Check in Device Manager and there will be a drop-down box in Contol Panel -> Display for "Screen #2" (click on the picture of the screen with 2 on it and look at the information below). It will say
"2. XXXXXXX monitor on CyberBlade XP Ai1n Adapter "
If the the monitor is listed as Default Monitor, you will definitely need to find drivers for it. It might be listed as a Plug and Play Monitor or even as Compaq 420, but you may still need to install the correct (updated) drivers for it. As mentioned, they should be available for download at Compaq:
    www.hp.com/support
Edit: If it is quite old, Win XP drivers may not have been made for it. You could try Win 2000 drivers, they may or may not work.

How do you want to run the monitor? You will have a choice of putting a check in the box "Extend my desktop onto this monitor ". If you uncheck the box you will have a "clone" of your normal desktop (which, by the sound of it, is what you want).

    Matt
