    Hope someone can help?

I have a IBM Thinkpad T30 and attempting to connect wireless, keep getting error about network password has to be 40 or 104 bit.

My desktop works ok (sky netgear router ) but laptop will not use key provided?

I suspect the laptop needs software or some other form of upgrade for the encryption but dont know which. Reinstalled everything from IBM web site, any ideas what is required and if software where will I obtain it?
    (No original disks)

    TIA

If the router is yours, why not change the encryption and/password?
You could even try disabling the protection and try, to see if it works at all.

Further: could you be more specific, because I don't really get the whole problem.

    Sorry
I have aquired an old IBM laptop which has a wireless adaptor installed, I formatted the drive win xp and went to the IBM web site and downloaded most of the drivers as I have no original install discs for the laptop.

My ISP is sky which uses encryption with the key stamped on the body of the router. My desktop pc works okay with wireless and the key installed, but the laptop gives an error message as in my first post.

I suspect there are 2 types of encryption and the laptop uses the earlier version, the key supplied by sky consists of 8 letters.

I turned encryption off and the laptop connects okay, however I turned it back on again just in case someone wants to use my bandwidth :)

Basiclly the laptop is not accepting the 8 letter key?

So you enter the 8 character key and it doesn't accept it?

if that's the point it's kinda weird. Try changing the key to WPA if you are able to do that. Otherwise, check you're hardware for the wireless chip at device manager (Control Panel) and go to the site of the manufacturer to see if there are any updates available there.

Just checked the router is using:
    WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key).

It gives you the option to change to WPA-802.1x
    or
    WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
    or
    Disable

Will mess about and see if I can find updated drivers or just stick with it hard wired, will let you know if I find a solution

    thanks again

I am using WPA because WEP was just too difficult to setup for me.
You just need to enable it and enter a key. That's it.

The wireless adapter on the laptop does not support WPA. You must use WEP, which means you have to config the access point for WEP, either 40 or 104 bit. (40 = 10 character key)
