    Using Win XP Pro Service Pack 2, all current updates.

    IE 6 will not show the .gif file I have on my website. It's a picture
    I made using "Paint" a long time ago. I think this problem is new,
    don't remember this happening with IE before.

    I do have Display Pictures checked in Settings.

    All I see are empty boxes where the pictures should be, with a little
    red "x" in the upper left hand corner of each empty box.

    Would anyone please help? Thanks.

    I just ran into this myself. I don't even remember the name of the gif file but using test for a name instead, the gif was named test.GIF. The link to the gif was point at test.gif. Changing the name to test.gif made it work. I wasn't aware that upper or lower case letters in a name would make a difference but apparently they do.

    Anyway, assuming you've checked to make sure the gif is there and located where it should be, check the name of the gif and make sure the link has the exact same name, including upper and lower case letters.

    Hi Zander,

    Thanks so much for your reply! Actually, I'm finding it's not just a problem with my own website - Internet Explorer is blocking images the same way on other sites I look at.

    I can't figure out what's wrong. I do have "show pictures" enabled.

    After this last round of "Critical Updates" (XP Pro Service Pack 2), a few other things have gone wrong on my computer. For one, if I try to download a file to my Desktop, it apparently downloads, and the computer says it's there, but it is not shown on the Desktop. I have to download the file to a different directory, and THEN I can find it.

    Also, IE gave me a "FORBIDDEN" sign on a web page I tried to access today - it was only a download page for a new version of an application I use!

    I tried to change whatever settings I could that might have been responsible for that, and it worked and I was then able to access that page.

    Also, some of my applications are no longer working properly. For example, one application will only open in full screen mode and the upper right corner button that is supposed to make the application smaller won't work at all, so I cannot drag and drop files into that application (nor does it support copy and paste or open files from Explorer under the File menu), so now it is extremely difficult to use.

    And this last "critical update" to IE even changed my home page! I had to set it back to what I wanted again.

    WHY DOES MICROSOFT PERSIST IN RENDERING ITS OWN OS's INOPERABLE?!

    I'm pretty upset. I bought this computer last June and now I really wish I'd made the switch to a Mac. There's not much good freeware for the Mac but at least they seem to work.

    Anyway, please excuse my rant. Just upset right now.

    Thanks again so much for your reply.

    Hi, again, Zander,

    You are right - I somehow have the link wrong. The other pictures on my website show up fine.

    I've been trying to figure out how to fix it, using a copy of the particular page, but it has me totally stumped because I can't remember how I managed to put the pictures where I did on that page in the first place.

    The problem seems to be a wrong path - it gives a different name to the page than what the page is actually called (audio.html is the right name). Instead, it calls it my full name and _Music. And I don't know how to fix it because I think, after having tried to fix it with first the Netscape "edit" option, and then failing at that, trying to fix it in IE/Word edit, I think I'd have to change something on the html source page and I have no idea how.

    All my other links work just fine - the other pictures, the audio file, etc. It's just this one picture on the audio.html page I can't seem to fix.

    Yes, I tried changing the file extension to lower case because it turned out that it was in upper case, but that didn't help.

    It has to be some change in the name of the page that's associated with that picture. And I can't figure out how to fix it.

    Anyway, thanks again so much for your reply.

    Can you post a link to the page of your web site where the pic doesn't work? No promises but perhaps if we could look at it, we could get some idea of what's going on here.

    Hi Zander!

    Actually, it's a little embarrassing because my website is very unprofessional. But the URL of the page is:

    http://www.panix.com/~gsk/audio.html

    The missing images which I can't figure out how to fix are called "yellow.jpg" (I was mistaken when I called them .gif files) and they're just childlike pictures of a sort of smiling sun, which I made in "Paint" several years ago. They were linked on the audio.html page and they are in the same directory, as are all my website files. Everything works except for those particular pictures.

    I put the picture on the page twice - once on the right hand side with text to the left of it, and one on the bottom left side under the text.

    If you do take a look at the page, please don't listen to the song that is currently posted. The recording quality is very bad, and you will get a bad impression of my music. I posted it for the few regular visitors to my site who are interested in my songs, and have already heard much more polished recordings of mine.

    In any case, thanks so much for trying to help! I really appreciate it very much.

    Gail
    I don't know how to fix their paths - I had not changed anything and they used to show up fine, but now they just don't. I have forgotten the very rudimentary basics of html so I don't know how to edit the source page. And everytime I've tried to fix it using the GUI edit page in Netscape and IE/Word, I have just not been able to get it right.

    Well, the source code of the page points to image001.jpg instead of yellow.jpg for that picture. Rename yellow.jpg to image001.jpg and then see if it works for you. An alternative would be to edit the source code of the page so that it points to yellow.jpg instead of image001.jpg. Either way should work although renaming the file would probably be the easiest of the two.

    Hi Zander,

    Thank you so much! I tried renaming the picture to image001.jpg, no luck, then to imageOO1.jpg, and no luck. I guess I could try renaming it back to yellow.jpg, and try editing the source code.

    Thanks so much for everything. I really do appreciate it, even if I can never get that picture to show up.

    Hi Gail. Well, there seems to be something wrong with the code but I have to confess that HTML isn't something I know a lot about. If I right click on the square that's there for the picture and choose properties it shows http://www.panix.com/~gsk/audio.html which of course is the address for your web page. The properties should show the path to and the name of the file that belongs there. I'm not sure what's happening there.

    Right click on the WindowsBBS.com banner at the top left of this page, select properties and you'll see that it shows the entire path to and the name of the file. Yours doesn't do this.

    Looking at the code I have some thoughts but they are more guesses than real answers. Hang on a bit and I'll see if maybe I can get somebody who knows HTML to take a look at it. There's a few around here who are pretty good at it.

    Hi Zander,

    Again, so many thanks for helping try to sort this out!

    I really don't want to be a bother to anyone. The picture isn't all that important. It would be nice to know how to fix it, but I really don't want to impose on anyone or be a bother. You've already been so generous to me with your help, and I really appreciate it so much.

    Rt clicking on the missing image DOES show the path to the image. (maybe the page was edited and republished)

    The file image001.jpg is not in the directory called /audio_files else this would display the image:
    http://www.panix.com/~gsk/audio_files/image001.jpg

    At present, there are 2 missing images on the page:
    http://www.panix.com/~gsk/audio.html
    and the html code path for BOTH missing images is:
    audio_files/image001.jpg

    I suggest you don't use MSWORD as an html editor in the future...

    To keep current page and make it work (if it's in the stars), locate the images you want to use, edit the source code to reflect the actual image names, upload the images and edited html doc to the /audio_files dir.

    This is the code location for the first image:
    Code:
    <v:imagedata src= "audio_files/image001.jpg" o:title= "yellow "/>
    </v:shape><![endif]--><![if !vml]><img border=0 width=512 height=384
    src= "audio_files/image001.jpg" v:shapes= "_x0000_i1026 "><![endif]><br>
    <br>
    <br>
    <br>
    <br>
    This is the code location for the second (bottom) image:
    Code:
    <p class=MsoNormal>h<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shape id= "_x0000_i1025" type= "#_x0000_t75" style='width:384pt;height:4in'>
    <v:imagedata src= "audio_files/image001.jpg" o:title= "yellow "/>
    </v:shape><![endif]--><![if !vml]><img border=0 width=512 height=384 src= "audio_files/image001.jpg" v:shapes= "_x0000_i1025 "><![endif]></p>
    </td>

    Hi TonyT,

    Well, thank you for explaining that the path directory is "audio_files" - I don't understand that at all. The page is called audio.html, and the links or anchors to the picture simply pointed most recently to yellow.JPG, although I'm pretty sure that I didn't originally type the file extension in upper case.

    First I changed the image name to yellow.jpg, then to image001.jpg, or whatever Zander had discovered it was called on the source page.

    I didn't publish the copy of the page I had tried working with because the pictures became displaced and I didn't know how to space them the way I had done originally.

    I have no idea how the path to the images could have changed because I made no changes. All my website files, including images and mp3s are in the Panix Public directory which contains everything on my website. So I don't know how to create a directory within that directory.

    I guess I'll just have to try to keep working on a copy of the source page and see if I can figure out how to change the paths to the images, but I have forgotten what little rudimentary html I used to know, so it's probably going to take awhile.

    It was incredibly nice of you to point out more of the problem, and I am very grateful and appreciative of your help.

    Hi TonyT,

    OK, I went into my Panix Public_html directory, and made a new directory called audio_files. Then I made the name of the image image001.jpg and dropped it in the newly created audio_files directory, and my stupid little image is showing up now!

    Thank you so much for your help, and that goes for Zander too!

    I have no idea what created those changes on the webpage, but for the moment it seems fixed.

    I couldn't have figured it out on my own. I thank you both so much for your kindness and generosity in helping me.

    Glad to see you got the help you needed Gail. Tony was the one I was thinking of when I said I'd try to get help. And, like I said in the other thread Tony, thanks again for stepping up and helping us out here. :)

    No problem. Actually, it was a pleasure to do, after having spent the last 3 days debugging some javascript that was driving me up a wall!
