I had Java1.5 update 9, and everything happy, but having heard of a new update, I decide to check if there was one. And, I got notice that there was a version 11. I downloaded and installed it, and, at the end it ask me if I wanted to open IE7. I said yes, and it went through a test that Java was ok.
Now, how about Firefox, Seamonkey, and Netscape. None of them has the update 11 files. I copied thm from the Java bin folder, and pasted them in the programs plugins folders.
Is this normal. Was update 11 unnecessary for the gecko browsers?

    Hi Westside

Java is a system entity. Is used by browsers and other applicatons. So when you update the system you update all that use Java.

In most browsers you can turn on/off Java.

Some programs have builtin basic Java. Some have Java Plugins but these basically allow hooking System Java.

You can run the same Java Test that IE ran, with the other Browsers to confirm.

The level of Java is now up to 1.6.0. I recently uninstalled my Java and updates and downloaded 6 from Sun.

I am well aware of what you are saying. The puzzlement comes because some of my programs have the .dll file of 1.5.0.9, and some did not. When, I completed the installation of 1.5.0.11, only IE came up. None of my gecko browsers did (which I use exclusively). So, I copied the pertinent .dll files, from the Java program, and pasted them into the plugins folder of each program. This happens with almost every other update.
As for 1.6, I was not aware of. I went to Java|Update, and was told that there was an update from 1.5.0.9 to 1.5.11. Is the update notification working?

Westside: I don't know if this sheds useful light or not (don't shoot me if it doesn't), but I downloaded the latest Java update to my wife's laptop yesterday and your post made me curious. I checked her browser, Netscape 7.1, and at the very top of the list under Plug-ins was:

    Java(TM) 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 U11

    File name: NPJava11.dll
Java Plug-in 1.5.0_11 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)

    MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled

    application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.1 Java Applet Yes
    application/x-java-bean;version=1.1.1 JavaBeans Yes
    application/x-java-applet;version=1.1 Java Applet Yes
    application/x-java-bean;version=1.1 JavaBeans Yes
    application/x-java-applet Java Applet Yes
    application/x-java-bean JavaBeans Yes

The columns in the above table don't line up right, even after I tried to arrange them to do so, but I think you can figure things out.

    Bobbo,
don't worry, I am a lousy shot. I had nothing like you show, until I , manually, copy/pasted the files. As for my Java Control Panel, 1.5._11 is the latest version .

A good thing to do here is. In Add/Remove uninstall all Java.

Reboot, do a gentle reg clean like CCleaner issues before install.
