    Apparently the cd finds no drives and aborts installation leaving me with dos;

    A:\> This mobo loves me ;)

    Would doing this manually work? hunting down all the nessacary drivers + installing them onto a disk manually? Rather than using the mobo disk i mean.

    Will come back to this tomorrow, thanks very much for your help, its been great.

    No - you have to run the MakeDisk.exe and need a floppy in the drive to do this - its a self extracting file. There are three of them. Go to a friends house and find a whole machine to make the disks you need.

    ;)

    edit: there will be a menu for you to follow when you boot to your ASUS CD. It might not be pretty but it lets one get the job done.

    Ok well after waking up this morning and it being magically broken again i've finally figured out it was 1 stick of memory that would sometimes work and sometimes not.

    I've managed to make those disks and have started the windows install process going through the f6 and loading all the xp files, but now the machine is intent on rebooting when it gets to the "setup is loading windows" (before the F8 + format options) Have tested with another hdd and it just crashes.

    OK, one certainly has the option to follow or not follow anyone's advice - that's one of the things that makes this an interesting learning experience for all. At the same time, one certainly has the option to "bail out" when its obvious that their advice isn't being followed.

    No further guidance will be forthcoming from these quarters. Sorry to hear that your memory is once again suspect after your earlier pronouncement that you "fixed" this. Sorry I ever questioned it in the first place.

    Good Luck Dezzy.

    ;)

    Actually it was your advice that helped me to find the problem, after doing the cmos reset the system had a total failure again which led me to once again remove the suspect stick of memory.

    Having never come across that sort of problem with memory in the past it was difficult to figure out exactly what was going on, after having so many different things said from different places, it was your clear and direct help that had helped me locate it (if being somewhat lucky in the process). For that i thank you.

    Again thanks for your assistance, it was valuable even if you have not had that impression from my posts.
