My son has a HP entertainment notebook which would not load windows xp because of dll file missing. I loaded Windows 98SE which is doing fine except, there is no sound, not enough colors in the display settings, the wireless connect no longer recognized, in device manager all of the other devices (PCI) have an exclamation point in a yellow dot beside them. Have I completely destroyed this notebook? I don't know if it will still play dvds or burn cds, scared to try. If anyone can help I would very much appreciate it.

Hello ShellyKelly and welcome to the Board,

What was on the Laptop to begin with?

Was the XP loaded because of a problem? And "loading" neans: upgrade, repair, clean install (format)?

    XP retail or OEM?

"dll file missing" - what was the .dll file?

    Regards - Charles

    can I get XP back

    Hello ShellyKelly
I know what you are going throuht I was there at one time with 12 missing DLL. files.
First you need to find the ones missing . How you are asking by first pressing start, programs,Accessorie, system tool , system information and load modules.
If they are missing you will see exp.(ntdll and behind it you will see not found)
once you find what is missing there is a place that help me redownload the file and it is free. If not I would not have a PC. Hope this help you find the missing files.
The fourms rules say I can not give you the web site here sorry.

And for the sound if you have a motherboard disk run it and you will get your sound back.
    jabfarm.

    re

The copy of Windows XP you are trying to install is it legal?
Some copys of Win XP what are NOT legal can cause a lot of problems, they can also bugger up the BIOS.

You need to install the motherboard, video, network and sound card drivers, in that order.
