pc always running at 100%, not sure what it is

my laptop is running slow. CPU is running at 100% Everything takes so long

I have ran AVG and Lavasoft on Safe Mode. Nothing.

I would appreciate any help on this.

Welcome back. Tho I'm not surprised, seeing as you have not updated the system with any critical patches since you were last here in January. You would likely have close to 65 critical patches to retrieve from MS.

Without getting these updates you're going to be here monthly for cleaning.

You have two major infections, we'll attack the first, which is a back door. If you perform any financial transactions on this machine I suggest you contact the banks or credit card companies to advise them of a possible breach in your personal information. And do it tonite, right after you finish reading this sentence.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
• Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

 

Well, the good thing is that this is not the same PC. Well, maybe not so good thing.

What I didnt realized is the severity of the virus, worm or whatever. Kinda concerns me. I haven't used this PC for any financial transaction since the pc started to act up.

Do not attempt to download any patches until the system is clean, it will not likely work.

Lets get an AVG Anti-Spyware scan.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

• Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
• Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
• On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.

• Next select the [Start Update] button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine ".
• Under "Reports "

• Select "Automatically generate report after every scan "
• Un-Select "Only if threats were found "

Close AVG anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:

• Turn on the computer
• Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
• Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.

Launch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.

• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan ".
• AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  Once the scan is complete do the following:
• If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions "
• Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
• Select the [Save report as[ button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
• Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG report scan.(Please edit out any cookie, Recyler and System Volume Information Folder references)

Then lets get a new HJT log file please and deal with what's remaining.

OK, I overlooked one item in the log which requires a special tool. But we're going to streamline the instructions some, as the fix requires AVG Anti-Spyware, which you have already run. No sense running it again a day later.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri). Save it to your desktop.


Double-click the Smithfraud.exe and it will install a new folder to your desktop, called SmithFraudFix. Shortly after that a dos command window will appear. Once it opens, hit any key to continue.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore you may get an alert.

Reboot the system into safe mode, this way:
Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear on screen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Then give me a new HJT log file and we ought to be able to finish up at that point with some fixing with HJT.

Ok, now lets finish up, nice work.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It must not be installed on the desktop nor in any temp folders.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe into this folder (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe). When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed. If they are not, continue with instructions

Download the Killbox from here and save it to the desktop.

• Double-click the KillBox icon on your desktop to open it
• Select "Delete on Reboot "
• Then select "All files ".

Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

I don't know anything about this. I thought this would be a good place to ask. What happens if you stop all tasks- processes, restart load defaults? Will it get rid of unwanted background.

I believe that if you have programs installed that are set to start at start up they will start after a reboot. Just ending task will not keep them from starting up.

You need to go into msconfig> start up tab and disable them at start up.

Glad to hear everything is running well.

And no, you really needn't purchase anything to keep clean. Depending on your habits, there is plenty of good reliable freeware, some of which we are going to recommend below.


We have 2 more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:


Delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol 2007 v11.1.2007.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

pc CPU always running 100%

i did notice something.. After being on the pc for an hour, i have noticed that when i have IE running for a while it will freeze up. After a few attemps to close it, finally I'm able to reopen a new IE page. I did look at my performance and did notice high peaks while attempng to close or while frozen and when re-launching a new browser.

 

Not quite sure what this could be, can you reproduce the problem, meaning that will it freeze up at the same time, after an hour?
