    Here are the logs you requested, the owner is picking it up tonight because he needs to do some kind of download to his hand held device for a business trip. He's returning it to me in the morning, so I won't be able to do the online scans until tomorrow;

Everything looks good, no worries on this box.

The KAV scan is back up, just in case as it was so badly infected.

    Tom,

Given your last update, I told my friend he didn't have to bring it back to me, but that he should do the online scans just to be sure. He agreed to do them by the weekend. He said it seemed to be behaving normally, so I told him if he saw any abnormalities to let me know asap and not wait a month or two as he did this time. Let's marked this resolved, hopefully not to be reopened.

Thanks very much for the help.

Tom, thanks for re-opening the thread.

My friend called me today and said he is experiencing some of the same problems as before, the machine tends to freeze up, especially after switching accounts. I actually saw this happen when I attempted to switch to his wife's account. It loaded the desktop, then when I attempted to open a program it just froze, the mouse would move but that's all.

I have a HJT log and a log from RootKitRevealer as well. I feel like he has some kind of infection again but not sure what.

Whole lot of nuthin' going on there Bill.

After reviewing the thread, we never did run any system utilities, so I think that would be a good idea to do now.

Run System File Checker and ChkDsk. No matter what order they are run in.

I'd wager we should also use a temp cleaner and maybe a registry cleaner if your comfortable with one.

    Download Atribunes ATF Cleaner
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Tick the following boxes:
      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All User Temp
      • Cookies<<<---By deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • History
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
    • Click the [Empty Selected] button.

For a registry cleaner I love RegSeeker. Simple, fast and free. Very dependable.

    Hi Tom,

Rats, I was hoping there might be some malware causing the problem.

I've downloaded ATF Cleaner and Regseeker and I'll give them a try, I'll do the chkdsk as well. I'll have to get his XP CD for the SFC, as I remember it usually wants the CD if it finds something to repair. The problem is this was a WinME machine that he upgraded to XP w/SP1 and then put SP2 on it. I'll have to slipstream his CD with SP2, probably should be done anyway in case he needs it in the future.

I'll do what I can with it tonight and post back with the results.

There is a work around to avoid using the XP disk, check the page, it's a bit further down.

    Tom,

I've tried everything you suggested, but it didn't help. SFC didn't produce any errors, chkdsk found one problem in the internet logs folder and fixed it, I ran the ATF cleaner and Regseeker also. The problem seems to be with switching user accounts, if you log into any of the accounts right from system boot they are fine, if you switch to another account, the desktop for that account loads fine, but not all the icons appear in the system tray and if you try to start a program the machine just hangs up. The mouse will move but that's pretty much it. Sometimes Task Manager can be used to get a shutdown, sometimes not. I checked the event viewer too, not much going on there that's any help

Since this doesn't appear to be malware related, if you want to move this to a new thread in the XP forum or want me to start a new one there that's fine.

    Tom,

Just thought I would update this and let you know that I believe I have found the problem. They have ZoneAlarm Pro on this box with multiple user accounts. When I was trying some things out yesterday, I switched from the primary account using fast user switching to his wife's account. The desktop loaded but it seemed to hang after that. The mouse still worked so I tried swithching back to the primary account again, and after the desktop loaded there was a pop-up from ZA asking permission for explorer under the other account to launch zclient.exe. I responded allow and switched back to the other account and all was well. I was able to switch to any account easily without any problems. I shutdown the machine and booted again, same problem. Telling ZA to remember the setting didn't work, so I have an issue open with Zonelabs to find out what to do.

I did some digging in their user forums and found that this is a known problem with XP and fast user switching (FUS) which ZA hasn't addressed. There are a lot of frustrated users reporting the same problem, some of which have switched to another firewall because of it. A work around is to actually logoff of each account before switching to another one, but that's kind of a waste of time when fast user switching is available.

If I get a solution from ZA I'll let you know.

Thanks again for your help on this.

    Bill

    Hi Tom,

Well, I received a response from ZA support, unfortunately it's not what I wanted to hear.

    When I explained the situation to them, this was their initial response;

"Unfortunately, there is no way of doing this with ZA because of the way
Windows handles fast user switching. It simply will not remember that
setting because each time you switch its a new access attempt. "

    So I asked if I could create a rule for explorer.exe to fix the problem and they responed with this to try and fix it;

"There may be a problem with your TrueVector service. ZoneAlarm is
dependent on its TrueVector service to function properly. You may
need to refresh the files associated with this service, especially
after a networking change, OS change, or ZoneAlarm update. First,
check in the upper right-hand corner of the ZoneAlarm Window. You
should see an All Systems Active message in green letters (to the
right of the lock). If the panel is displaying All systems Active
and ZoneAlarm is still not functioning properly, it is possible that
    some files have become corrupt.

To repair this problem, please follow these steps. Please note that
this will remove your program permission settings (so you may want
to make note of them), but re-establishing them is a simple process.
If any of the steps below does not apply to you, or you are unable
to perform the function listed, please continue to the next step.

** NOTE - Beginning with ZA+/ZAP version 4, you can create a Backup
of your settings, and then restore them afterwards. See the local
    ZoneAlarm Help files for specifics.

    1. Reboot your system into Safe Mode. The method is determined by
your OS but normally either pressing F8 at the beep, or holding the
control key during boot up works. For more information on rebooting
in Safe Mode, click Start, then Help. Click the Search tab, and
    type in SAFE MODE
    2. Open the Internet Logs directory (in 98SE/ME this will be
c:\windows\internet logs, in 2000 it will be c:\winnt\internet logs,
in Windows XP it could be either of these folders). If you need to
keep a copy of old alerts, copy the ZAlog.txt file to another
location first - then Delete all files in this folder that have the
    extension .RDB, .LDB, and .TMP.

    3. Empty your Recycle Bin.
    4. Reboot your system. "

    This did not resolve the problem, so I responded by asking why they could not handle this situation when I had seen in their user forum that others with the same problem had switched to Kerio and it was able to deal with FUS. This is their response;

"Its the way our firewall works, it recognizes each new login as an access
attempt and alerts as designed. In order to fix this we would have to
change the core of program and it would diminish the security of our
    software. "

So, it looks like the only solution is for each user to manually logoff before another one signs on, or switch back to the first logged on user and answer the prompt from ZA. What a nuisance. My friend will likely be going to another firewall program rather than deal with this and I don't blame him.

Just thought I would pass on the results of my inquiries.

Thanks for the info Bill. It's always good to find out about these quirks about such popular software.

Have you tried COMODO Personal Firewall yet? It's a bit more involved, but it's free too.
