Trying to get AVG Free 7.5 installed. Old computer with Win98, SE had message to update AVG 7.1 to 7.5 by Feb. 18th,
But following instructions has been a frustrating failure.
They recommend doing a "repair" "“ but installation stops with this message:

    Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgabout.dll: creating backup....
    Access is denied. (5) %DESTINATION% = "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgabout.dll.install_backup ", %SOURCE% = "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgabout.dll "

I go to the forum and search for a similar error message but it says to register first. But I had registered. So I try to register again and it seems that whatever I do "“ it says that user/email already exists. But if I try to use that ID to register, it puts me back in the same never-ending loop. There is a post about a DCOM error "“ but not sure if it’s related to my case:
    http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?1,67408,backpage=,sv=

I would like to try to remove the old program and do a new installation, but that option is not given "“ only the option to add or remove selected components. But they don’t seem to offer any help doing this and I am reluctant to remove anything without proper instructions.

I like AVG Free but don't want to be without protection trying to figure this out. Any help?

    Thanks,
    Charlie

    Hello charlie,

Your best course is to uninstall thru Win98's Add/Remove - can you do that? and start fresh.

After uninstall, either use a reg cleaning program or use regedit to remove AVG references. If you're not comfortable with doing that, just remove any AVG files on the HD.

I'm assuming that what you're doing is not saving the update file but using the Run option. Instead, download the 7.5 setup file and save to a folder. Double clicking on the AVG setup exe starts the install.

    Regards - Charles

    Hey Guys

Appearently the AVG installer can't close the running DLL's.

So try this if you want.

Rt Click AVG in system tray and exit AVG Control panel.

Then enter taskmgr and end all entries that begin with AVG. May need to kill some of these 3 times before they go.

Then run setup and choose Repair instalation.

    Thanks guys,
This sounds like the simplest approach. Let me try this and get back later.

Thanks everyone, esp. mflynn for the quick fix.
Deleted 2 running items in tskmgr and it installed w/ no problem.
