    Hello,

One of my laptops is having a trouble with network connection lately, and it was working fine till last nite, but when I turned it on this morning, an unexpected error message popped up saying:

The error message that pops up when I start up the laptop:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!

    Program: C:\WINDOWS\Systems32\HncUpdate.exe

This application has request the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I went to network settings, but it said "make sure the wireless router is on" even though its been on for several months. I had scanned my computer a few days ago by scanning my computer with ad-aware SE personal and Spybot Detect&Destroy and found some spywares so I recovered them. I also tried scanning by using two AVs.

I was wondering whether some of the laptop's registries are corrupted and that is causing this problem. I contacted my wireless router company and made them run a test for the wireless router and found nothing wrong with it. They believe that the laptop is the problem.

    Can anyone help me? :(

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Based on what I could find, it appears that file is suspect. Do you know what it is by chance? Does it look familiar?
Ok, help me on this one. Are you saying that you restored malware from a previous scan, to put them back onto the system?

    Let me know.

As you have already run AdAware SE & Spybot Search & Destroy, with updated definitions, and are still having problems, next, we move onto HijackThis!

Download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Then press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan. Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'. Then proceed to your original thread, unless otherwise instructed and click the '[Reply]' button and paste the saved contents to be reviewed. Do not make any modifications to the log or perform any 'fixes' until told to do so.

About the "HncUpdate.exe" file, I really have no clue what it is. I went to follow the path and check out what's in the folder along with the exe and thought it was one of the files that cames with the laptop. And I didn't want to take a risk and delete the exe file.

About the spybot search and destroy, I took the step that many people would and clicked on "fix the problems." I assume that took care of the infectous files I had. I don't think using spybot search and destroy or using ad-aware program harmed my computer because the laptop's wireless connection was fine for next several days.

I downloaded Hijackthis! and scanned the laptop with it.
    Here's the log:

We can fix this and delete the file with no worries. You just need to be sure and keep it in the recycle bin for a few days. And because HJT is installed properly, it is easy to restore.

Besides, was there any info contained in the file, such as manufacturer, version, language and so forth? If not, all the more reason to be suspect.

We can also scan the file at Jotti too.
    Jotti Online File Scanner

And depending on your location, the 017 line is an IP which is blacklisted. So unless you're in S. Korea, it needs fixing.

Below you will find my results and recommendations from your HijackThis! log file analysis. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Search for, and delete, if found, the following files/folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\HncUpdate.exe <<<--this file

Reboot post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

I did all the things you told me to do and removed all those registries. I also deleted the exe file and now I don't get the error message anymore.

The log above is the scan after I removed the registries.
My wireless connection still doesn't work for some reason... I am gonna try reinstalling it and see if it works.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

After the reinstallation of my wireless router on the laptop, the wireless connection works perfectly now.

I have one question that I really need to ask you. I lost my original sound system, "SoundMax" from spywares and currently using high definition audio. Is there a way I can get my SoundMax back?

Glad to hear the wi-fi so now operating as it should.

The log is clear now, and no more errors so thats good too.

For the SoundMax, do you have the original install software? If so, re-install it. If not, uninstall the drivers thru Device manager, then reboot. XP will see it and re-install it. Maybe it will work.

Let us know how it goes. You may have to get another thread started tho to fix it if those two options don't work. It's not uncommon to have peripheral damage with malware.

We have 3 more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol 2007 v11.1.2007.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

Everything looks fine in that account. Pretty rare we find anything of significance tho. Occasionally remnants never anything that requires massive clean up.

Alright, I set the system restore point and all i need to do is now download all the programs you recommend me to download.

About SoundMax, I don't see it under sound - device manager, so I am guessing I will have to start a new topic about that. Take a look at my new topic if you can.

Thanks so much for cleaning up my computer!

p.s. by the way, I might have to post some logs of my other laptop, so if i do i will post in this thread. And also some of the apps above are for internet protection and says for "IE" I was wondering if those apps are gonna work if I use firefox.

A new thread for sound max is a good idea.

Most apps which state they are for IE, won't run with FF unless noted.

Looks as tho you didn't copy the whole thing properly, no running process list, nor anything thru R0-04....please try again.

also, please just copy and paste as opposed to wrapping the text in code, much easier for me to read and copy.

    hello, its been a while.
Ive been using "High Audio Definition" since last time i fixed my computer.

but for some reason, the problem is repeated once again..... Sometimes I cant even hear any sound and when i go to sounds option under control panel, it says nothing is installed and such, then when i restart my laptop, its fine again for a few mins.

I've done virus scanning, spyware scanning and even system restore(that I had saved), but apparently none of them fixed it.

    Can anyone help me out?

This is not likely to be malware, I think it would better if you started a thread over in general software. It will get the attention of the proper people.
