Since Installing IE7, I noticed that the cookies folder has moved from "c:/documents and setting/username ". Where did IE7 move the cookies folder to?

In Windows Explorer, do a search for user_name@ (if you have a space in your user name you must use the understroke). That will most likely reveal the location of your cookies folder.

    Strange ... ... !

Do you know your way around the registry?

Start > Run > type in: regedit > OK > make sure that "My computer" is highlighted > Edit > Find > type in: user shell folders > Find next > the first stop should reveal the system folders assigned to your profile by Windows.

Don't make any changes until you have told if the cookies folder is listed!

Then, it should be there. In C:\Documents and settings\yourusername\ ... , which folders do you have? Apart from the cookies folder, do they match the folders listed in the registry?

It's not there. Under Documents and Settings is my username, All Users and Owner. Cookies is not listed under any of these folders.

I changed my settings in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > and noticed that you need to uncheck the box for "hide protected system files" in order to see the cookies folder!

From that I deduce that you are on XP Home, right? I'm on XP Pro and it may differ but it seems like you do not view hidden files and folders.

In Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > mark the radio button for "show hidden files and folders ", uncheck the box for "hide protected system files" and for good measure, check the box for "show contents in system folders ".

Under Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > I unchecked what you said. It still doesn't show up. While unchecked I did a search for Cookies and it showed up under Documents and Setting>Default User. But Default User does not show up under Documents and Settings.

Trying and experiment I noticed when I tried to check do not show hidden files and folders it will NOT check the radion button. When I return to see if it's been checked it NOT checked. I tried this several times and show hidden files and folders remained checked. Ummmm.

Something is definitely wrong! I don't know where to go from here and I will regrettably have to leave you hanging. It's late here and I need to go to bed. Let's hope someone else chips in!

Thanks for trying. I too feel something is not quite right here. When I do a search and a cookies folder shows up, when I open it only index.dat is in them no cookies.

There are several cookies folders on a system. On my XP Pro (which might differ from XP Home) there are cookies folders in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\ (hidden)
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User (not hidden)
    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService (hidden)
    C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService (hidden)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile (not hidden)

I don't have the time to reread the pervious posts but I believe that some being hidden and others not being hidden is the reason for you seeing empty cookies folders. On my system, there has only ever been cookies in the folder under my account so, what you see is normal (in that respect).

This makes me believe that your problem is that your system does not allow you to show hidden files and folders. All cookies folders are probably there but you can't see all of them.

Your user account, is it administrator or limited?

Could it be anything with permissions that prevents "show hidden ..." to stick?

    Christer,

All this happend AFTER I installed IE7. When I had IE6 I could seel the cookies folder, open it and see all the cookies. Now when I do a search and a cookies folder comes up, when I open it there's only a cookies dat in it no actual cookies like IE6 would show.

    You mentioned:
    C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\ (hidden)
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User (not hidden)
    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService (hidden)
    C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService (hidden)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile (not hidden)

For some reason the Default User folder is hiden on my system. I have a laptop if that makes any difference.

Please, confirm Home or Pro! They do differ in some respects and I believe that system folders is one of them.

Problems after upgrading to IE7 are not unheard of. Most (?) problems are related to AntiVirus software being allowed to run during the upgrade. Some AV software not only need to be shut down but uninstalled and reinstalled after the upgrade. If I remember correctly, ZoneAlarm is one of them.

What procedure did you follow to do the upgrade?

I have ZoneAlarm Pro version 7 (Firewall ONLY - NOT anti-virus). Before upgrading to IE7 I selected for ZA Pro to NOT start up automatically. I turned OFF my McAfee AntiVirus. Rebooted the computer to make sure none of them ran. Then I did the upgarde. After installing IE7 and playing with it for a brief period, I then turned ON McAfee and fired up ZA Pro to start automatically.
