I downloaded and installed two drivers from MS just now. One of them is an update for VIA- Primary IDE Channel.

I just happen to be using a pc with a VIA chipset....I crashed and burned with a BSOD etc..Was able to boot to Last known configuration.

**** The same drivers where detected on two different Dell pc's....DO NOT INSTALL THEM !!!

I never download any drivers from Windows/Microsoft Updates. Too many times I have seen them corrupt a system.

It's 'common' knowledge - at least 'us' that know ;)

You stay away from drivers offered on Windows Update!

Go to the manufacturers web site, there you'll find the latest drivers.

And yes, the "Last known Good configuration" was designed with these kind of scenario's in mind.

dont feel bad. your not the only one to do that. a couple of months ago i went to windows update and using the custom feature i stupidly installed 2drivers that i thought were crucial for my computer. one was something for my netgear and one was intel pro. boy did they mess up the computer. i used system restore plus took out the 2 updates. everything was fine. now i only put in the critical ones from the express feature.

I run an un-updated SP2 system and it flies! Nobody has exploited me yet. MS means well but you can carry paranoia too far. I choose to fix my system when I see the need and not have it patched for something that may never affect me but may slow my system down or may cause obscure problems. I realize that MS can't know that but I can. YMMV

The discussion wasn't about system updates (patches), but about drivers for your hardware being offered on WU.

I’ve always grabbed the drivers from the Windows Update site and never had an issue. The driver I mentioned above was more of a glitch with the system in that every pc was detecting it.

Using drivers that have passed the Microsoft compatibility testing sounds like a good idea to me. Not all manufacture bother with this little step…
