My dear husband was looking at free sites that may not be appropriate for all viewers and while there he collected some pop ups as well as a eye full. For this he is now banned from the computer. I have run ad-aware, spybot and of course AVG even though it isn't a virus. Could someone please look at my Hijack This file and let me know what to get rid of. His life is in your hands.

    Jennifer

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

What your hubby picked up is a mild case of LOP. Easily spotted by the trained eye and just as easy to remove.

I would make two comments about other software on the system tho:
    • You have LimeWire installed a common P2P app. With any of these P2P apps, it's not so much a matter of if, but when you're going to get hit with some sort of nasty. If it were my machine, I'd remove it.
    • I also see you're running Symantec and AVG anti-virus. This is not good. they will cause you more headaches than anything else. Select which you prefer and uninstall the other. Norton will need an uninstaller to be fully removed and even then, some orphan registry entries will be left around.
    Now, onto your log file.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed. If they are not, continue with instructions
LimeWire <<<If you elect to keep it, ignore all related fix instructions.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

I would like to get rid of the Norton Antivirus and keep the AVG as it has been great for a freebie. I thought I had gotten rid of it but it likes to stick around I guess. The limewire has been on the computer for a long time with no problems. We hit a snag when he visited and signed into a radio station site. Thats when the busty blondes and party poker champs started to enter my life. He is no longer allowed on that site. Thanks for all the help. Here is the new HJT Log.

I need to check my glasses.

Did I say you had Symantec installed? I don't see it now. Anywhere.

Aside from the 016 entries, which could have been from an online scan and we can fix those.

And oddly enough, it looks as tho there is still one LOP folder present.

Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AcidSoap] C:\DOCUME~1\User1\APPLIC~1\LITEFR~1\deletebuildplu s.exe

    O16 - DPF: {2BC66F54-93A8-11D3-BEB6-00105AA9B6AE} (Symantec AntiVirus scanner) - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/S...in/AvSniff.cab

    O16 - DPF: {644E432F-49D3-41A1-8DD5-E099162EEEC5} (Symantec RuFSI Utility Class) - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/S.../bin/cabsa.cab

Reboot post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

That file is gone, there should not be any pop ups. Are you getting these as another instance of IE?

Lets look a little deeper into the system.

    Please download SilentRunners from here

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.
Then select 'Yes' to confirm the search.
When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.

Please post the entire contents of this logfile created back into this thread for me to see.

    Silent Runners

Thanks agin for all your help. The pop ups keep coming. I have no clue what he was looking at to pick these up. I also don't think our Internet Explorer settings changed. I'm stumped!

Sometimes it can be an innocent page that does this stuff. Not all malware sites are pr0n or P2P or warez. Some site owners are just a greedy bunch.

Ok, I figured out why we can't remove it. It is set up as a task in your task scheduler. Forgot about that part. It's rare but sometimes they slip that sucker in there too to confuse users. And me in this case. :p

Now we can have you remove the task.

Click Start, then click All Programs, then point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks. The Scheduled Tasks window opens so that you can modify the settings.

To delete it, right-click the "AE1250469391C416" task in the Scheduled Tasks window, and then click Delete.

Close out task scheduler. Reboot system, let me know if there are any more pop ups.

    scheduled tasks

The funny thing is there are no scheduled tasks in that folder. Maybe the problem has disappeared as quickly as it came. Computers can't live with them or without them....Jen

OK, I found the automated removal tool for this, please do as instructed below.

Download: Microsoft Task Scheduler Command Line Utility

    http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/jt.zip

Unzip and copy jt.exe to your Windows folder.

Open Notepad, copy and paste the below and "Save As" KillJobs.bat
In the "Save as type" select: All Files
Copy KillJobs.bat to your Windows folder.
    Double-click on "KillJobs.bat "
(when prompted, allow the file to run)

Once that's done, reboot the machine. Then I want to get another log from you, using HJT:
Open HJT, click the [None of the above, just start the program ]button.
Then click the [Config ]button in the lower right hand of the program.
Then select the [Misc Tools ]button.
In the upper left hand side of the program tick the two boxes [List also minor sections (full)] button and the[ List empty sections (complete)] and hit the [Generate StarupList log] button, select 'Yes' when prompted by the dialog box. The resultant scan will produce a notepad log file, please paste that log file back here for me to review.

Ok, still there, so letd try this other tool I got sent.

Please Download NoLop.exe to your desktop.
    Then:
    • Close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
    • Double click NoLop.exe to run it
    • Click the [Search and Destroy] button and it will begin the scan.
    • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
    • Now click the [Reboot] button.
A Message should popup from NoLop if not, double click the program again and it will finish.

Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log.

--If you receive the error, that mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered, please download this file to your system32 folder then rerun the program: http://www.boletrice.com/downloads/mscomctl.ocx --

I'll assume this means no more pop ups? If so, we just need to rid the file which is still present.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AcidSoap] C:\DOCUME~1\User1\APPLIC~1\LITEFR~1\deletebuildplu s.exe

 Search for, and delete, if found, the following files/folders:
    C:\DOCUME~1\User1\APPLIC~1\LITEFR~1<<<<--this folder

Reboot post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

You might want to go to internet explorer- tools - internet options - content- and use setting you want.

    HJT Log

As far as I know none of my Internet Explorer security settings have been changed. I'm not quite sure what my husband has done. I just know that party poker and casino advertisements keep popping up. Is there a program that will catch all or any of those? The Internet Explore pop-up blocker must just be for show!

Ok, so is this a new problem since the other day or have the pop ups not gone away at all yet?

Last I heard things were ok.

    Let me know.

May as well run Silent Runners again, see what it shows.

    Pop-Ups

Things were great until I got back home last night. I went on and had to quickly get off the computer before I lost my sanity. You could not look at web pages or email without a popup every time you looked at a new page. Things appear to be back on track since I took that acidsoap file off the computer and changed every security setting I could think off in Internet Explorer. The ones that showed up last night were a little different. They were all Casino and Party Poker. The dating and Null (thats what it says in the upper left hand corner) ones were gone. I have never had anything like this happen and I hope with everyones help it is finally resolved. As of this afternoon it is looking good.

    Jen

I would suggest setting your hubby up on a limited user account. This will prevent any downloads he tries to install or ones that try to slip by. Until he can use the pc responsibly, this may be your only option, aside from banning him entirely of course. :p
