I have 7 Icons on my Quick Launch. When I bootup or reboot, 2 of them become grouped off to the right and are not shown without clicking the arrows. This happens with an Opera browser Icon and a Web site Icon. Also happens no matter where they are in the lineup. Group Similar Taskbar buttons is not checked. This has just happened today. Not this way before. This is a pain. I hope someone can help.

Maybe you just need to increase the space allocated for the QL taskbar.

Hold the cursor over the right side of it (where the vertical bar is) until it becomes a double pointed arrow. Then left click and drag the edge to the right until all items appear.

Hey Surferdude2. I uncheck Lock the Taskbar and drag the edge to the middle of the screen. Reboot and it comes back to 2 Icons grouped to the right.

OK, thanks for the additional info.

Since the QL taskbar is a function of IE, have you changed to IE7 or DL'ed any hot fixes that may have affected IE? If so, maybe roll back for a test.

FYI, the path to the QL folder is:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Check in there for something untoward.

Or unlock it drag it out to desired length and then lock the taskbar once again. Keep in mind that taskbar real-estate will get cramped when multiple tasks are running. It may be easier to learn to live with the shrunken arrowed quicklaunch menu and drag the icons you use most frequently to the front of the list. If not your more than likely going to wind up using an arrow to view tasks running on the taskbar. Either way "arrow" will have to be used. In other words your going to be annoyed if do and annoyed if you don't. You just have to decide which is the least annoying , quicklaunch or taskbar.

Opps... I see you've had it this way for a while and liked it. Please try the "unlock-move-lock" method and ignore all the rest.

Or....As I do. Unlock Increase vert size of the task bar to 3 increments..hide taskbar then lock. I have the quick launch sized to about 20% of taskbar and the icons are 2 layers. I can see the time, day, and date and the taskbar stays out of the way until I mouse over it.

I did a clean reinstall about a week ago. The problem did not start then. Reinstalled Firewall, ViruScan, and Dsl modem. Reinstalled other Apps that I use. Takes many hours, over several days. Took a day off, and then downloaded, and installed updates. 73 to be exact. 1 of them was IE7. By the time I noticed, it was too late to reject it. The problem did not start then. The 7 Icons are the same number that was on QL bar before the Clean reinstall. I changed the order, and it still moved the Opera and Web Icons. The unlock move lock method did not help. There was another change at this mornings boot up. The Icons are right where I put them last night. Go figure! I guess I will never understand this system, if I live to be 100, (whch is not likely). I will make a text file of this thread, just in case. Thanks for your help.

    Hi, wahlroot.

I'm glad your problem is resolved. :) Thanks for letting us know.

If you ever decide to have some of your QL icons hidden behind the double arrows instead of always visible...

I have my Taskbar always locked with three QL icons showing and the rest behind the double arrows (in alphabetical order). As goddez1 suggested earlier, I drag my three most-used icons from the "behind the arrows" location to the "always visible" location and Windows XP remembers that.

One should be able to drag any remaining QL icons that are behind the double arrows to another location (out of alphabetical order) in that list as one desires and Windows XP will remember that (as long as the Taskbar is locked). You can also drag the "always visible" QL icons to another location in the "always visible" group.

    EDIT:
I suspect that is because you didn't lock the Taskbar before rebooting. (Hoping to help you understand your system before you reach 100. ;))

I must not have been clear. I tried the taskbar locked and unlocked. Either way, no difference. Looked strange, with the applications shown starting in the center.
