I googled "how do I remove javaw.exe" and could not get a straight answer. This is how I came to this forum. This creep, javaw.exe, is killing my PC - it is slower than slow! It is devouring my resources - have got the dreaded green box saying 100% usage. Please tell me what to do! Yes, I have run Ad-aware (it found live365.txt malware) and Spybot S & D (no threats) and I've run SpySweeper, which found no traces.

BTW I use Firefox 2.0 and Windows XP pro. I connect using Comcast cable and when new last Xmas I had 1GB, but I also use a Maxtor ext hd.

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

That file could be legit, depending on its file path location. See here. But it wouldn't be using up that much CPUs.

If, you have already run AdAware SE & Spybot Search & Destroy, with updated definitions, and are still having problems, next, we move onto HijackThis!

Please download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Then press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan. Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'. Then proceed to your original thread, unless otherwise instructed and click the '[Reply]' button and paste the saved contents to be reviewed. Do not make any modifications to the log or perform any 'fixes' until told to do so.

OK, well I have gone thru the log, but I don't see the file you mentioned running.

Not even the legit one, let alone a rogue. Did you try and fix it?

The log has a few minor items to fix with HJT, just non-default settings.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

wasn't successful at fixing those things

I did as you suggested and ran the HJT program and noticed the things you said to fix. I did - but they're still there!

Also, is that javaw.exe thing back? (I think I see it toward the bottom of the running processes!) I have used the Task Manager to stop the process and it works for a while, but then it comes back. I believe I got it from a P2P program I have been using, called MP3Rocket in conjunction with a lifetime download service I bought from iMusic, inc. - except that I had to download their upgrade and I think that's when I got it.

Ah first off, the reason those lines came back could be because I forgot to tell you switch off SpySweeper. If we don't do that, it will re-insert those lines, because it doesn't know we made the change. You should also disable SpywareGuard as well, it too will interfere with changes. I should have told you this first off, my bad.

So disable the real time monitor in that like this:
Open it, click the Options tab, then the Program Options tab and uncheck load at windows startup.
Then click the shields tab and uncheck home page shield and automatically restore default without notification

Then run HJT and fix those lines again. they should go now.

And the jawaw.exe that is running is legit, no need for worrying there. Loads of people have it. But if it keeps sucking up CPUs as you stated, then just kill it. To prevent it from starting up with your PC, use something like WinPatrol 2007. You can control your start ups with that application, we always recommend it.

I must still be doing something wrong

I disabled SpyGuard and SpySweeper and "x'd" those particular entries. Then I reactivated both programs and restarted. Ran another HJT log and they're there again! (HJT log at the bottom of this post) What did I do wrong? Should I have NOT reactivated those programs and let them reactivate themselves through start up?

I see what you mean about javaw.exe - when I use my P2P service, I notice, through Task Manager, that it's gobbling up CPU - so I "end" the process. I DO expect, however, that while I am using the P2P service, the downloading will slow me down. I understand that - but I don't get why it's doing this now? It didn't do it before. Do you think when I DL'd and installed the upgrade something happened?

Thank you for your help - I love this because I get to learn so much.

BTW, I used to use WinPatrol, but another tech forum told me not to anymore because it was in conflict with some other program I used (can't remember which program it was though)

Not sure how to handle the javaw process, it ought not to be sucking up any CPU. What has me suspect is the P2P connection. They cannot be trusted. Lord knows what else is trying to download\install via that service, trying to circumvent security settings. Beyond uninstalling the P2P app, which I strongly recommend, I'd kill off the javaw process when you use it.

For the other R lines in HJT, these are set by the OEM manufacturer, in this case HP. I'll need to look around for how to change these settings.

Once I find the solution I'll drop a note here.

    Fyi

Just so you'll know - MP3Rocket is the program (it's not anything like Livewire, etc from what I understand) that I get my movies and music from. Never had a problem for almost 2 years - paid, I think, $50 for the lifetime service. Have successfully gotten well over 200 mp3's and around 50 (DVD) movies! Hate to give it up - there's GOT to be a solution!:(

    Also regarding "second user "

Does that have anything to do with me setting up a network? Got a router recently to connect my 2 computers together so both can use the Internet? Not fully functional yet - my kid's got to clean her room first! LOL

No I don't think that will be a a problem.

Lets try one more thing to try and see what's going on with that process and as well, the other connections going out.

Install Port Explorer, will give you some good detailed info about what is being sent and which application is sending it.

We may be able to determine just how much activity is going on.
