I have the following message when I start my computer. It works fine but it is annoying.

Disk monitoring System has detected that drive 1 on the primary parallel EIDE controller is operating outside or normal specifications. It is advisable to immediately back up you data and replace your hard disk by call your support desk.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run set up utility.

I was told I needed to go into the setup and disable something I am not sure what that something is. Please help.

You probably have to disable SMART in your bios to get rid of the message. However, I would heed it's warning and back things up like it says. You wouldn't necessarily have to get a new hard drive but I'd certainly be prepared for the worst case scenario if I were you.

Have you ever run chkdsk on the drive? It might not be a bad idea. Open a command prompt and type chkdsk C: /r (assuming c is the drive letter). Reboot and let it do it's thing. When it's done and booted to windows, open your event viewer (start>run>eventvwr.msc) and look under applications. Look for an event type named winlogon. Double click on it to see what chkdsk found and/or fixed. Does it say anything about bad sectors? Any errors at all on the disk?

I'm not really sure what "operating outside or normal specifications" means. If it's something due to bad sectors on the disk or the geometry of the disk or what. I only know that the few times I've seen that type of error, trouble wasn't far off. It could be a false alarm, I don't know as I don't really have that much experience with it but, like I said before, I'd be prepared. Just in case.
