My new Asus A8JR Core 2 Duo notebook comes with pre-installed Vista Home Premium. There's a link to Microsoft Download Centre for Windows Live Messenger.

I downloaded Windows Live Messenger. It installed, started, signed me in and in a few seconds without doing anything, a new windows pops up saying that "Windows Live Messenger has stopped working" and "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I need to click the one and only one "Close program" button.

I un-installed, and re-installed it. Same thing happened. I disabled the bundled Norton Internet Security and reinstalled it. Same result!

I called Microsoft hotline for help. They didn't have a clue for a whole week.

What's wrong? How to fix it?

    Hello IvanH,

I talked with MSN and was told that Messenger is not compatable with Vista at this time.

No "how to" and no "fix" other then wait.

    Regards - Charles

Live Messenger works fine with Vista!

    IvanH, try this:

Open Advanced system settings (Start > Control Panel > System, then click Advanced system settings under Tasks.

On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button under the Performance header. Select the Data Execution Prevention tab, and check that Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only is selected.

If not, and you want to keep running the 2nd option, add the Live Messenger executable to the exceptions.

    Hi Arie,

I have checked the setting of my notebook. The first button (i.e. Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only) is selected. So, it's not the cause of stopping Windows Live Messenger.

Can you think of other reasons and a solution for me?

I am running Windows Live messenger now, and not having any issues. They may have upgraded it.

Congratulations to you. I am not as lucky as you. My Asus A8JR notebook still have the problem. Even worst now, every time I boot up Vista Home Premium, a dialog box pops up telling me Windows has blocked the Windows Live Messenger during startup. And the Windows Live Messenger icon on the desktop has a shield on the lower right corner, meaning that it would require to run as an adminstrator. But the problem of automatic stopping still there.

Microsoft technical support suggested me to contact Asus but Asus said they have very little experience on Vista and can't help me.

Vista needs more memory to run Windows Live Messenger

    Hi Everyone,

I re-installed Vista Home Premium and problem of stop running the Windows Live Messenger still remained.

Then I added the RAM to 1.5 GB, then it runs smoothly.

I thought it's the problem of inadequate RAM.

(I wanna add a comment here: The Asus A8JR comes with 2 pieces of 512MB RAM and occupied the two precious slots. When I need additional RAM, I have to waste one of them in order to add a 1GB RAM to it. What a waste! Very soon to my prediction that I shall need to discard another 512 MB RAM in order to free anothe slot for another 1GB to make it 2GB!)

I have it also installed on an old laptop, Dell Latitude C640, 2GHz P4-M with 768 MB RAM; runs perfect.

    Hi Admin,

Are you using off-the-shelf Vista Home Premium? Mine is Vista Home Premium OEM version bundled with Asus.

My Windows Live Messenger is version 8.1. Now it works at 1.5 GB RAM, at least for 2 days without stopping.

My friend told me that he could installed and run Vista Home Basic on 512MB RAM. But he used that machine just for Internet surfing.

    Regards

Suppose... I bought an upgrade key from the Vista Family Discount offer, and used my downloaded copy of Vista to install.

Thank you Arie. It seems to be a good idea for my other PCs.
